Probably the most skilled bass player in the world right there. The problem I have with stuff like this is for the most part it sounds terrible (especially the guitar in this particular video).

I might be inclined to agree with the guitar sounding like shit, but I actually find slap bass to be enjoyable. Wooten's stuff with Bela Fleck is definitely awesome.

You have zero idea of what Reggie Wooten is doing here to qualify it as sounding like shit. He is an amazing guitarist and is most definitely one of the most talented out there. As for VWooten, it has been standard operating procedure that he is the best bass player ever. I would suggest looking into the Victor Wooten/Steve Bailey Bass Extremes DVD or Wooten's Super Bass Solo Techniques Video, both are amazingly awesome. FTW, they are having a thump off here.

I find slap bass enjoyable too (I play bass myself), and a few of the grooves Victor plays in the video sound great, but others don't, regardless of how technically and rhythmically solid they are.

Reggie is obviously a great player as well, and playing slap on a standard guitar is hard as hell, but most of the time it doesn't sound good. It's not a knock against Reggie so much as a knock against the instrument.

This one shows how amazing Reggie is as well.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kebD2LC6hJsThe opening on this vid is incredible, and when he's playing the bassline for himself to accompany his tapping it's really cool too, but then he goes back to that slapping bullshit like in the OP vid, and it sounds like utter crap.

Slapping on the bass is one thing, but in both videos most of the slapping on the guitar just doesn't do anything at all for me, and seems to be just a lot of random noise.
You have zero idea of what Reggie Wooten is doing here to qualify it as sounding like shit.I beg to differ; it doesn't matter what his intention is- or what your qualifications are to justify it- if a person thinks it sounds like garbage a person can express that. No one is saying that Reggie Wooten isn't an awesomely talented musician, as he obviously is, and then some. But as listeners we all have the right to say that we don't enjoy a particular piece of work. We "qualify" what we do or don't like with our ears.

i checked out a few cds my dad had of him (soul circus, what did he say) and its more like smooth jazz then the videos, are there some other cds that are more "funky"

He's not really a funk bassist. On record he plays mostly fusion stuff like on the two CDs you heard, and bluegrass with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. If you want to hear funk bassists look into someone like Bootsy Collins (Parliament/Funkadelic, Booty's Rubber Band), or the inventor of slap bass, Larry Graham (Sly & the Family Stone, Graham Central Station).

victor definitely has some funk stuff on record, it's just really spread out. all of his solo albums pretty much encompass a bunch of different styles, although the one that has the most funk in it is probably a show of hands.
