Yeah. Basically, the battles are fought in real time, while the grand strategy making is done in a turn based style.

how is this game, i played only shogun: total war back a few years and it was freakin awesome. i always considered picking up one of the later titles but i very rarely buy games for the pc, pretty much i only ever buy SquareSoft RPGs outside of HL related games.

i love it, no other rts matches the combat in this game, and i have been playing for hours on end today as england in the grand campaigne, and havent even finished conquering scottland yet, my only problem tho is once you get past the rebel villages it seems you have to wait a long time to build up an army otherwise you are throwing them away if you attempt to siege a built city.
i cant imagine how long it will take to beat the grand campaigne, conquering jerusalem and all.

EDIT: FUCK those flaming grenade guys that the timurids have. they're killing my byzantine dudes.

yea dude, for 10,000 florin cap games you can get 2 elephant units, 4 mongol infantry archers, 2 naphutuns (napalm guys), and 2 things of mongol heavy lancers
that strat is unbeatable tbh, you just have your elephants pound one side, the napalm guys hit the spear infantry on the other with the cavalry to intercept any any horseback units. the napalm guys make enemies panic like crazy, and you just have your elephants sit back while archers thin out the left flank of spearmen then your elephants rush in and the entire army will panic, its rediculous. if you dont use the naphutuns or just use one, you can get a cavalry archer brigade to distract enemy horse units and make life easier
i used this strat earlier, it comes out to 400 or so units and i lost about 50 men (one elephant thing went nuts on my fucking archers before i managed to kill it) and i killed over 900 (the enemies had 1200 or so standard army troops- like pike/heavy inf/xbow/heavy horse)
this game is nuts, i have another strat where i get a wall of musketeers, a wall of pike to rush in front if horse charge in, and a wall of pavise xbow units behind them with heavy horse concentrated on one side, if the enemies rush you with anything but infantry they get annihilated, and if they sit back they get massacred as well. the only downfall to this is if you lose your cavaltry for being careless, then they can flank your archers and wreck you

I started a grand campaign as Russia - fucking rediculously hard.
I beat the smaller campaign as England (really easy...)
Some of the battles that are WAY out balanced, infavor of me, I just let the computer settle out now. Usually the computer does better then me :(
Otherwise, I'm sick and tired of fucking inquisitors, bastards are unkillable.
ALSO - can someone give me a good hint how to keep from losing all my merchants? I mean, damn near every 5 turns, one of my merchants looses his goods. Pissing me off.

Q: Whats the cheat/file I need to unlock all the factions?
A: Go to "C:\Medieval II\data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign\desc r_strat.txt" (or whatever your install directory is) and just move all the unlockable factions to playable in the txt file.
as for the merchants, i wouldn't bother with them unless you have the patience to send them to dongola (south of cairo) or timbuktu and make sure to keep them moving if their paths get blocked. the ivory at the former and the ivory/gold at the latter is worth ridiculous amounts if your capital is far away. with my capital in london, a level 7 merchant trading gold at timbuktu made about 1k florins per turn. don't forget to change your capital back and forth to get the game to properly calculate the trade value, otherwise they'll make a measly 100 or so.

whoa, im out of the loop about all this.
A level 7 merchant, how do I make him lvl 7? Experience? Merchant's Guild? Where/how does that happen.
Secondly, moving the capital.... I have to move it from where it was, to somewhere near the gold/ivory? then back again a turn later?

you get experience for ganking other merchants, as well as over time trading. i didnt know the capital thing, thats awesome too. i'm playing on hard as byzantines and already control the eastern mediterranean and just finished conquering italy up to Rome for when the mongols come and eat up my eastern kingdoms. so pretty much i have a massive empire rolling, control greece, persia, and southern italy with all the mediterranean islands. i figure islands should be hard for those fag mongols to get to :D

merchant's guild buildings and the markets (great market, merchant's quarter, etc.) affect the merchant's initial level (same thing with the other agents), then they get the rest from ganking and trading like jarek said. i just conquered timbuktu, made them from the first level merchant building, and let them level on their own.
for the capital thing, move it once and the game gets the values right, then you can move it back in the same turn assuming you to keep your capital in the same town. the farther away your capital is, the more a resource is worth. i'd imagine a gold in timbuktu with a capital in the northeast corner of the map would be worth an asston.
i'm 'finishing up' my england game right now. with about 45 territories under my control and 60 turns left, i decided i'd just bum rush everyone and try to conquer the world. now i have 25 turns left and i still need all of anatolia and the middle east. i'm gonna be so mad if i can't get everything :(
i think i'm gonna dl a mod that lets you be the papal states and do them next. (inquisitors and instant excommunication for anyone you attack? yes please.)

Quick question to you guys that have bought it: I've been looking online everywhere about the multiplayer options, and nowhere does it specify clearly. Is multiplayer PvP only, or is there any coop possible (ie me and a friend vs bots). Keep in mind I never played this game or its predecessors so I don't know how multiplayer works in this series. We just want to have fun playing an RTS game against computers.
