View Full Version : Want to console game again, Xbox 360 now or wait for PS3?

Topic says it all, i've always seen you guys as a reliable source on opinions. I have not played console games since 2000. I had a PS2 but quickly stopped playing it after I got introduced to online PC gaming, but i'm looking to get back into console. I'm just wondering if I should get a Xbox 360 or wait it out for a PS3. I heard the 360 has a lot of hardware failures and heating issues, but the reviews I read was a little over a year ago.. I'm not a diehard gamer but just looking for something that won't break on me and has a good selection of sports games and shooter types, those have been the kind of games i've been into.. Also which one will have better online play, Xbox Live or Sony's service?
Should I just go with the 360 since its 200$ cheaper, are the graphics on the PS3 really that much better or is it a miniscule difference..? Or is it worth to wait and get a PS3?
Forgot to mention i'm also a manager at a video store so I can rent out games for free, giving me a whole library to try anything I want pretty much, which is another thing to look into saving money.. not saying i'll rent everything, but anything I want to try i'm free to take home..

Xbox 360 is gonna be more worth it. Only reason you should think about getting a PS3 is for MGS4/FFX13/1-2 other exclusives. Other than that, the 360 has any other game PS3 will have and a bunch of its own exclusives. Unless you have a lot of money, the PS3 won't be worth its price tag.
I don't use Xbox Live, but if you read articles. It would take a while (in years) for Sony to have a Live service anywhere good as Microsofts. Since Xbox Live is going around 4-5 years now, it's a lot more advanced.
Only the 1st generation systems of the 360 had issues. Pretty much any version you get now will be 2-3rd generation after. You shouldn't have any problems at all with the system itself.
You will find more shooters on the 360 (ex. Perfect Dark Zero, Gears of War, Halo 3 when it comes out, Ghost Recon/Rainbow Six games). I have pretty much all the sports game (NBA 2k7, Madden 07, NHL 07, few others). Everyone is very good and if you have an HDTV, it will look amazing in HiDef.

i was in the exact same boat. i played PC games for a long time and wanted to get back into console gaming. I picked up a 360. COuldnt be happier.
NHL 07 on 360 with HDTV is AMAZING. WOW.

I would guess that the PS3 will see more RPGs in general over the long run, so thats something to consider.

It would have to be 3 to 4+ years from now. If you look at the lineup, the 360 will actually have more RPGs in the next few years. The hyped ones are Blue Dragon and Lost Oddysey (both from creators of FF team that left; makers of Chrono Trigger back in the day).

Sounds like some good replies so far, if the difference in gameplay is little to none, i'll for sure go for the Xbox for the Live service and cheaper price, I'm generally the only one that plays console in my house or would, although i'd consider in getting a 2nd controller for friends and my girlfriend who would probably play as well. I pretty much thought it would come down to the game selection, i've never played Halo before on Xbox and I heard Gears of War is pretty insane.. either way, working at the video store has its advantages, I can have as many out pretty much if the title isn't being constantly rented by customers. I do like RPG's but a very select few, I think the only title i'll dearly miss from PS3 is Metal Gear Solid, but I do have a PSP.
I am not huge on graphics, while I do like them to look nice, the PS3 having better graphics won't edge me over to that decision, I generally look for smoothness and quality.

Metal gear solid 4, devil may cry 4, and final fantasy 13 are the 3 games I will buy a ps3 for, though I have no plans on buying a ps3 on release.

Thats how it was for PS2 and Xbox. This time around (forgot where i read this) xbox 360 is going to have a shit load of RPGs.
My Xbox 360 Major Titles:
Halo3
Dead Rising
Fable 2
Also, the new GTA is coming out for both xbox 360 and ps3 at the same time. The controllers for xbox are much better too (wireless ones are sweet).

Yeah, my previous statement may not end up being accurate. I think what will happen though is you will see two different types of RPGs pop up on the PS3 and 360 (with a few exceptions of course). I think many of the RPGs that the 360 will see exclusively are going to be more similar to PC games (for instance, the upcoming Mass Effect which looks awesome). While the PS3 will likely exclusively carry games in popular Japanese franchises (Tales, Star Ocean, Suikoden, etc...) since the 360 represents only a small portion of the gaming market in Japan. The Two RPGs that fivestar mentioned could help to upset this though.

360 all the way, more games (ones actually worth owning),live service is unmatched. most ps3 games worth getting would be already out on 360 or wii months before ps3.why wait since it would be the same game u got on 360 except some minor diffrences such as maybe some more color and a few frames added.Ps3's launch titles are laughable right now. ONLY 1 game worth getting and it's resistance:fall of man which is 1 of the 2 exclusives at launch and rest are already on 360. Playstation 3 won't be worth getting until maybe for another year or two but hey,if u want to spend $499-$599 where the $499 version is not much since it wont come with a hdmi cable and would cost about $100 for one. In closing, if u have money to throw around on ebay because chances of getting one w/o reservation are slim to none through retailers go right ahead and get a PS3..Just play gears of war for 10mins and your decision will be easy.

What... the "killer apps" for the PS3 will be exclusive. Games like FFXIII, MGS4, and DMC4 will never see the light of day on any other console. With that said, the PS3 has a shitty launch lineup (though I hear resistance is good), so I will probably be holding off till one of the previously mentioned games come out.

To see the difference between 1080P (which the PS3 does --- but ONLY if you have a 1080P set) and 720P (Xbox360 --- just has to be any hi-def TV), you have to be within ~30" of the screen. And thats a fact. I sell TV's -- at the moment, 1080P resolution is very much over-rated, and blu-ray is the only format that really pushes for it (why spend the money on a 1080P set if you're not gonna use/need it).
I have a 360 (actually from the 1st generation, I was lucky) and I love it. PS3 you pay for a lot of things you don't want/need. And if you want True High Definition movies (if you have an HDTV), Microsoft is about to launch its HD-DVD attachment drive for the 360's, and will (probably in about a year, maybe more) begin converting to HDMI connection, which the PS3 uses (one of the few things I actually like about the PS3 system).
As others have said, Xbox Live is a great and efficiently working setup.
So, all in all, the 360 is by far the best bang/buck, assuming you're not an insanely huge fan of the few titles that will be PS3 exclusive.

If you wanna just look at exclusives, I'll show the ones where I would be interested in (most 360 ones, I already have that I listed).
PS3:
MGS4
FF13
DMC4 (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/734/734174p1.html)
Ninja Gaiden Sigma (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/734/734852p1.html)
White Knight Story (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/734/734330p1.html)
360:
Gears of War
PDZ (Perfect Dark Zero)
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
WWE Smackdown 2007 (it's on PS2, but not PS3)
Dead Rising
Enchanted Arms
Saint's Row
Oblivion
Rainbow Six: Vegas
Rockstar Table Tennis
Games out for 360 soon and later on in the future:
Crackdown (http://games.teamxbox.com/xbox-360/1324/Crackdown/)
Lost Planet
Mass Effect
Fable II
Two Worlds
Blue Dragon (http://games.teamxbox.com/xbox-360/1486/Blue-Dragon/)
Lost Oddysey (http://games.teamxbox.com/xbox-360/1176/Lost-Odyssey/)
Eternal Sonata (http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/734/734397p1.html) This is made by Namco (who made Tales series), but this one should be next-gen in terms of gameplay and what not. Read up on it.
You would have to go check out release dates. I know for PS3, a lot of those games aren't slated to come out till Q4 2007 (possibly summer for 1-2). Not sure if PS3 will have something similar, but 360 has the XBLA (Arcade).

That the 360 will actually have Ninja Gaiden TWO, and that the 360 has way more than just two good games.

I'd get a 360. The ps3 is an overglorified computer.

PS3 will have Gran Turismo 5 when it's finished but it'll have Gran Turismo HD... that game just rocks, but PGR and PGR2 is pretty damn comprable.

I've realized there's really no reason in arguing over consoles. Clearly there are reasons to get any of the 3 and reasons not to.
You aren't even just giving the facts and letting him decide for himself. You're just giving biased, uneducated guesses at the facts.

etc
This is the best advice in the thread.
The difference between the consoles isn't much. Get the one that has the most games you like.
Do your own research on each system. Find franchises you like, look at prices, ignore specs* and most importantly ignore people that try to say one is simply better than another.
* You should make sure your related hardware (tv etc) is compatible and optimized. Info along the lines of what CHIPMAN said is what you need to be aware of.

personally i'm not interested in ff and barely interested in mgs.
i prefer the x-box controller, x-box live is up and running well. you can buy one now for substantially cheaper than you'll find a ps3 for. it's already somewhat refined, whereas first-gen playstations have a history of malfunctioning within 2 years.
unless you really really want some of the ps3 exclusive games i'd go with a 360. but then again i'd go with a wii way before either of them

First, I have a 360 and love it...GoW is one of the best games I've played in a long time (both online and offline).
Secondly, I played Madden on the PS3 and even though I was shitfaced I thought the graphics just didn't look as good as they should for such an expensive tag. Granted, it is a first generation game and they never look as good.

As a gamestop employee, and owner of all 3.. Here's what I've told our customers (parents anyways).
xb360
-online/multi play (all games have online support)
-its for fps freaks
-some rpg's (ported games like oblivion)
-its a media center, if you have windows media center/soon vista, along with usb keys (i've heard..) you can transfer pic/vid/music to it. its my main stereo/dvd/gaming "thing" now.
-second in graphics
-lots of games
ps3
-single player system (ie FF/MGS)
-best graphics out of the 3 (nothing THAT noticeable, to be a deciding factor)
-havent tried multiplayer games since I only have one controller, so I cant comment on it
-few games (not the best system launch lineup)
wii
-fun as hell
-fps's we're somewhat akward for me but still fun
-the controller, theres nothing like boxing a relative that you hate, or owning them in tennis (ftw). that little knumchuck controller and the whole way it works with the system is just awsome.
-last in graphics
-again few games but better launch lineup the ps3, imo.
I am an xbox fanboy, but whatever. You can get a 360 now and have fun, or enjoy waiting outside.
And to be an asshole.. Yes, we do love not telling people when they'll be here, and place bets on how many people will be in-line the night before and who/how many will over-react when they dont get one :( and dont reserve anything, it doesnt work.

gamespot did a graphics comparison (http://www.gamespot.com/features/6162742/index.html?tag=features;title;1) between the 360 and ps3....
they pretty much thought the 360 cleaned up
You'd think that the PS3 versions would be exactly the same or slightly superior to the Xbox 360 versions, since many of these games appeared on the 360 months ago, but it seems like developers didn't use the extra time to polish up the graphics for the PS3. We found that the Xbox 360 actually had better graphics in the majority of the games we compared.

360 hands down, not trying to be biased although i own all 3 systems and have done my own comparisons but looking at the facts right there just tells to show that they were all in too much of a hurry to bring the ps3 and not even bother with their launch lineup.as of right now i'd say 360 wins can't say for down the road since the battle of consoles just started but if u want a system that has been proven to be better in more concepts than ps3...from those screens u can see although the ps3 seems to be more brighter but suffers with jaggies which we all should have left that on ps2.not saying sony is not a great system it's just not one right now and not worth the money spent.if u want a ps3 wait about 6months before something somewhat decent comes out. the Wii is also a great system but to put the wii in a nutshell it's just the gamecube with new interactive technology. It's not bad at it's price range and nintendo wii really shouldn't be compared to the ps3 and 360 since it's clearly did not have the intention of competing graphic wise.to sum all this up; go 360 if u want great HD gaming and shooters/sports. go Wii if u want the nostalgic games of retro plus metroid, mario, zelda.go ps3 if ur a diehard RPG/MGS fan you'l just have to wait a bit long..
