View Full Version : First thoughts of the Wii

Since you can play it at gamestop, i went and tried it out. You have to give them your drivers license to get the controller lol...

I played excite truck, since it was the only playable demo besides something else called "mii" but excite truck was pretty fun, graphically it doesn't stand up to the ps3 or xbox360 i played at best buy yesterday lol. But the controller is actually pretty sweet, it could be REALLY good to play, or REALLY bad. To play Excite truck you have to hold the contoller like - instead of like | and put your hands on both sides, and steer like it's a steering wheel, it's pretty cool, it kinda feels like it's not sensitive enough at some times, and too sensitive at other times, but for all i know it could be the game.

My first impression was for 250 bucks compared to 400$ for the 360 and 650$ for the ps3, i'd definetly go with the Wii before i would get any of those. But i'm broke right now so i'm not going with anything lol.

what makes you so sure that you'll be able to get one sunday morning? i'm hearing that most of the stores around here only have 50 or so in stock....i'd say it's gonna be just as hard to get your hands on this holiday season as a ps3 is.

I just took a bag of games to EB to get credit (81$ bucks!), and to inquire if they would be open midnight Sat so I could get my pre-ordered Wii and Zelda TP. So I will be up all morning Sunday.

Not really lol. Look up the Wii consoles being shipped by the end of the year by Nintendo.

Lewlz I just got a recorded phone message from NOA, confirming that my EB will gimme my Wii @ Midnight tomorrow. Much smaller window of opportunity for me to get mugged or bb'd! No line, no tent, no problem.

The bitch of it is, in this recorded message they a'splained that I could get an addtional 20% off of on trades at that time- and I just traded in 81$ worth of games this afternoon  Maybe if I take my reciept and throw myself on their mercy.

I haven't had much time to play mine because of work and junk, but the hour or two I played Zelda were fun times. Can't wait till Thanksgiving break...gonna play that sucka like 10 hours a day.

I went to my friend's room to play his.

Ill say im impressed; i ALMOST wish i got one inspite of not caring much for the launch titles, but the wii is damn fun, i can say that.

I played some wii baseball, and won in the first inning by the mercy rule.... which was a good thing, cause i threw my arm out in the first inning, lol.

Then we played some SSBM (from gamecube), and as far as i could tell, it worked perfectly fine. No frame drops or anything, so i'd venture to say the backwards compatibility to gamecube is on-point.

And last, he showed me some Twilight Princess.

He had about 5 hours logged in, and was near the end of the first dungeon (actually, he coulda finished it about 20 minutes before hand, but he couldnt figure out a puzzle that took me 5 seconds to solve) and he showed me the boss fight.

Granted, the controller works exactly like i pictured it (no free range of movement for sword swinging; thank God), it still looked fun and innovative.

I still think im gunna get my copy of Twilight Princess on GC, cause im too lazy to swing the remote.

_________

All in all, if you're sketchy about the wii like i was, try it out. You'll be in for a humorous suprise. Who knows, you might even witness Jose Canseco punching Jesus in the nuts! >.<

Didn't get to try the steering wheel or any of those games yet. In fact i haven't seen one so far since i don't think they were made in Montreal.

The only games i tried pre wii release are obviously ubi's: Redsteel, Farcry and TMNT but sadly no Rayman which looks real fun.

It's a real fun system. played like 4-6 hours yesterday and my shoulders are acually sore from boxing so many bouts. My biggest complaint is that they made the connection in the back of the wii special so you must buy a lan adaptor to connect it online( unless you have wireless.. I dont ). My second biggest complaint is that this lan adaptor is not availible for a month and a half. WII SPORTS is cool and ZELDA pwns.

is it worth getting?
I'm a nintendo fanboy and will always need to satisfy my zelda/metroid/smashbros/etc cravings, but from what I hear the Wii is just an upgraded gamecube, and won't ever come near the graphics available on the ps3.

I'm not huge on things looking pretty but it kinda sucks to have some ridiculously realistic game on the other side of the fence, while you're stuck with cartoons.

For those still looking, Toys-R-Us seem to have alot in their stores and will keep receiving til Christmas. Bestbuy announced the same. As far as online, Walmart is your best bet, they are selling a bundle for 600 which includs 8 games, so a pretty good deal. I looked at their site and the games they had available earlier today and there was every release game minus Zelda. If you look now however alot are gone (I assume from high ordering demand), so if you plan on ordering online from them do it fast before you're stuck with Open Season Wii lolllll. I myself secured my Wii and it arrives Wednesday :D.

Wii Sports: Only game I've sunk much time into is bowling, which fucking rules. The game is addicting in multiplayer, especially with beers about. Tennis is good but gets frustrating since you can't control your player movement.

Red Steel: It's a console shooter, I can't really approve of it.

Zelda: Not much to be said here. Game is amazing but most of it adheres to the formula set in place by OoT.

I dont have one, nor did or do i really have any desire to get one, so dont take what I'ma bout to say to heart. But dont also ride it off.

I can safely say, if there are games out ont he wii that you would buy and think you'd enjoy playing, you would be greatly pleased with the wii. It's innovative, fun, and addictive.

I personally had little-to-no interest in the wii, not only cause I didnt care for the launch titles, but I was skeptical about the whole wii-remote thing (the WIImote, lol) and the whole motion sensor thing. But I played baseball on Wii sports and I was sold.

It's awesome how if you wiggle the remote, it actually wiggles on the screen. It's just fun. Although I dont really have anything to back it up, all I can say is, if you have faith in nintendo, they wont let you down. Look what they did with the innovation behind the ds. This is the same thing in a whole 'nother direction, if you ask me.

Don't worry. There aren't any games out right now that use the online features. Right now all you can do is download Virtual Console games and add friends so you can send messages to them and have their Miis show up in your Mii channel.

ya I won't cry too bad about it..just makes me mad that you need to purchase an adaptor at all ( like the first wave of PS2's) I do need to play some altered beast though. Hopefully in early jan old school 64 mario cart and original metroid will be availible with the lan adaptor.

On another note I am actually sore from playing all of the WII Sports games yesterday 2 games of tenis, bowling, baseball, golf and like 9 boxing bouts lol ( thats alot of punching for my poor shoulder ).

It's a blast with a group of people. A lot of the mini games are great. About 75% of the games I'd say use just the Wiimote and the rest need the nunchuck. Most of the games are played with all people at the same time so you'll need enough controllers to go around.

I'd definitely recommend it for a party game.

VeeKaChu
November 22nd, 2006, 11:33 AM
Needs more accessories at retail.
I've only found a remote at one store (Target), and apparently the nunchuks are in very short supply. No component cables whatsoever, I've ordered from the NOA store online, shipping around the 28th.

Can anyone comment on whether 480p looks that much sharper than the composite? Adam Sessler declared that you (we) shouldn't even look at Zelda:TP without component cables, but can it really be that much better? COD3 does look horrible right now, I doubt I'll do anything with it until I'm in 480p, but again, will it be that much different? Anyone? Bueller?

I had the 480p cables for the GC, still do. Maybe they'll work for the Wii when i get it.

And 480p only made a difference in games that were great looking in the first place, like Metroid Prime 2. Metal Gear Solid:TSS had the same options, but it really only affected the cutscenes. GC stopped making games playable in 480p around the same time they stopped making the system with the inputs for it: evidently i was the only person who ordered the cables.

I have not seen 480p but it looks good to me :) but i would like to see the diff.Zelda still looks really good.. for a gamecube game. For those who haven't seen it.. it's about on the level of RE4.. maybe a little higher.
I had the 480p cables for the GC, still do. Maybe they'll work for the Wii when i get it.They won't. The plug is different from the SNES/N64/GC video cable.

GC stopped making games playable in 480p around the same time they stopped making the system with the inputs for it: evidently i was the only person who ordered the cables.Well, yeah. The graphics won't get any better but at least it will be nicer to look at. The main thing I find it helps with is defining edges, so good looking games usually look clearer. However they continued making gamecube titles progressive compatible long after the console stopped supporting it.
Also, I have only read that the GC controllers and memory cards will work in the Wii.As far as hardware compatibility, yes. Basically anything that can fit into a gamecube controller port will work on the Wii - including DK bongos and the mario ddr pad etc.

nice. I played for a couple hours today. This week is my week from hell so I will have to put off the Wii (actually unplugged and put into my desk drawer) so that I have less temptation to play it.

Played a few games of every sport, some by myself and some with my buddies (had trouble getting the second numchuck so could only do boxing by myself), but I will say that the reviews are spot on. Tennis + Bowling are great fun, Baseball and golf are hit or miss [pun intended], and Boxing is hard to control because it doesn't do a good job recognizing the punches without going extremly slow.

For the Wii, I think it probably depends on your area and how close to Christmas. I expect them to be hard to keep in stock until after Christmas is over.

My brother and I got up this morning and lined up at Best Buy 2 hours before opening. We got the 22nd and 23rd Wii out of 60 they had. Other stores may only get 12 at the least. The Wii remotes are hard to find too.

I know everyone in line got like 50-55 tickets an hour before so they could just come back when the store opened. There were people in the store that asked for the Wii and it was sold out at.

Does best buy give you money back on returns, or is it shitty store credit? If it's store credit, I have an extra Wii that hasn't been opened or used or anything (I've touched the box like three times actually ha) if anybody wants to buy it off me.
I haven't had a ton of time to play, but so far Zelda is pretty damn awesome. Only on the third dungeon though.

I was thinking of what to ask for as a gift for xmas and after had playing the wii I decided I'll probably wait a year before buying any next gen consoles. Although a lot of the newer good games are coming out for 360 (supposedly Microsoft bought out capcom?..if so good bye devil may cry, resident evil, and other sweet games), I was never really a fan of the console since the original xbox blew. No way in hell am I spending 600 + on a ps3, and with the wii it was a good workout and sorta fun, but there isn't too many promising games coming out before xmas. All the real good games other than zelda are still working titles (mario galaxy, resident evil: umbrella chronicles and I don't even know any other games that interest me). Although I'd take a wii over 360/ps3 any day I'm going to ask for a ps2 since I missed that whole generation of console gaming (had a ps but never bought a ps2).

I played Wii sports (bowling and golf) for like 3 hours last night with 2 of my buddies, so fun. I am considering getting one for christmas just for wii sports haha. Super monkey ball is kinda fun especially when you try to hop through the levels and do it in like 7 seconds.

If anyone has super monkey ball see if you can finish level 2-7 in under 10 seconds. I jumped off the edge and landed right in front of the goal and bounced in, so lucky, but awesome.

is it like Marble Blast Ultra for Xbox 360?

GhOsT
November 27th, 2006, 10:38 AM
I only played Marble Blast once and it's kinda similar in that you are rolling a ball around. However, in monkey ball you are usually rolling the monkey ball from a starting point to an ending point across a narrow path. If you fall off you have to start at the beginning of the path again.

WorldRunner
November 27th, 2006, 10:47 AM
is it like Marble Blast Ultra for Xbox 360?

In marble blast you control the ball. In monkey ball you control the maze. So it's somewhat similar in that regard but in MBU you also obviously have jumping and powerups all that. In MB you're simply rolling.

Both games are equally fun IMO. Monkey ball is more of a complete game but MBU was $10 or so... so that explains that.
