View Full Version : Your Favorite RPGS? *warning, probably spoilers out the ass*

So, i get sick of posting about rpgs, and not really being able to talk about them cause I personally dont like spoiling stuff for people, just like i hate when people spoil stuff for me.

So lets talk, what are/is some of your favorite rpgs and why?

I'll start.

____

The last "favorite" rpg that i finished will have to be Riviera on gba.
I know why I am hooked on this game, but I dunno why I am hooked on the game. It's a fun, innovative little rpg with a neat gimmick of not having a world map, but using Shadowgate-esque (i think that's the right game) dungeon crawling.

However, this game is everything on the opposite end of the spectrum. Infact, one of the other gimmicks (which is probably the biggest one in the game) is the "dating sim" factor that goes into it. Basically, your party is one guy and 4 girls, and if you piss them off, they start to get all aggitated and emo and whatnot and start to perform poorly in fights (miss more often, take more damage, etc).

The big kicker to that system, though, is the off-the-wallish situations that occur during the game.

Example, you're going through this city, and you come across this door. You look over to the side and see a switch, somebody steps on the switch and the door opens, they get off and it closes. Now, the obvious thing is that you have to leave somebody to stand on the switch while you go in and come back out, but think about it. You have 4 girls with you. Whichever one you put on there is gunna cry cause they're the fact one (and ironically, depending on which one you pick, another one might like you more cause of it). Granted there IS a right answer to it (which is obvious when you play the game) It's just hilarious what kinds of things happen.

Another one of my favorite moments in the game happens when you go through the swamp. You're walking through with everybody and you see a chest floating over some quick-sandish like area. Now it's blatently obvious that you cant just walk up and get the chest, but you have a ridiculosly small girl and a chick with wings. So you get left with the option of sending either one over to try to get the chest.

**

--shrug--

I mean, i know WHY i like the game. It's innovative and creative, but I dunno why I am hooked on a game that has a favorite system like this.

______________

I dunno. I do know, though; that that's one of my favorite rpgs.

I never really cared for Riviera (though I did order Yggdra Union regardless). It was just too linear and obvious. My favorite RPG is hands down Chrono Cross. The story, music, gameplay, abundence of characters were all great. Though seemingly most people pick Trigger because it's the original, I'll always love Cross more. I've played more RPG's then I can count but that is definitely my favorite.

All of the Suikodens.

The first one particularly because it was the first... The fact that you could recruit 100+ people to join your party and level them up each individually as well as the fact that you had 6 people in your "fighting" party. Great story and had a ton of fun playing.

First RPG I really liked...and I've liked each of them since + Suikoden tactics even if it did have the WORST DIALOGUE EVER

Yeah, I was glancing through my friend's nintendo power (didnt know they still made those) and saw an ad for Yggdra Union.

I was like "Oop, im gettin that" and he looked over my shoulder and was like "what?" I rolled the the magazine and popped him in the face. D:

There will be 500 mentions of it, but Final Fantasy VII will always be my favorite. I've never cared about the characters in a game more than I did with ff7.

Chrono trigger would have to be my second favorite because of the music and characters as well. Plus the general idea is just neat.

Cross is kinda odd to me. I enjoyed playing it, but I didn't understand why I needed 40+ characters when there was only 2 that were really developed.

Star Ocean 3 is the best rpg I've played combat-wise, but it's so fucking slow paced (and Fayt's power is never even used again at the end unless there's some ending I don't know about).

FF12 is looking pretty promising though.

THANK YOU!

The ridiculous twisting plot of Chrono Cross, the way they incorporate Chrono Trigger seamlessly, the endless amount of character combinations and magic allocations make Chrono Cross my favorite RPG.

I remember playing through it a few summers ago and finding out all sorts of shit about the story, stuff I had never thought of or made connections to. The whole thing is amazing. There are webpages dedicated to figuring the story out.

I liked Crono Cross a lot too, but I think I liked Crono Trigger more.

Star Ocean 3 was amazing. I loved that game and the combat system was so awesome. The Final boss on the harder difficulties is the hardest boss in video games, hand down.

I liked the first suikoden a ton, but I didn't like the second since it was almost exactly the same. Like plotline, characters (which is alright), fight system, everything. I just thought they could've changed more.

Right now my current favorite is definitely Xenosaga III. I love the combat system and haven't had this much in random fights since...well I can't remember when. Plus the storyline is always getting better. Amazing game.

Final Fantasy VII is definitely my all time favorite.

Baldur's Gate imo trumps console RPGs by quite a bit, with the notable exception of FF VII.

It's so different though, in that you can play it any way you want, that I don't think of it in the same way as console rpgs.

I have had both XenoSage Ep 1/2 and Star Ocean 3 for over a year or so and havent played more than 4 hours into each- I just can't get into it, I really dont know why. I have already invested ~25 hours into FF12 tho and it is definately my favorite PS2 RPG to date.

with a loose definition of RPG:

Vagrant Story
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (technically an RPG)
FF8 (despite leaving Balamb with 4000hp/2000dmg)
FF7
FFT (NOT ADVANCE- gay law system)
Ocarina of Time (read SoN)

I wasn't a fan of the Chrono series, and anyone who says Legend of Dragoon needs to be slapped upside the head for the beyond repetative battle system

edit: wow i forgot about Baldur's Gate, I don't know much about it but that was the first game I got for PS2 and me and my brother used to kill the guy who drops Onyx Swords about 100 times a night by saving and warping in

Ya know, normally I'd agree with you.

But after serious consideration and thought, i'd have to say FFT's AI is bad enough to get counteracted by the all around goodness of Disgaea.

Cause although FFT will forever be the "original" sRPG, and it will be one of my favorites in my heart, it's too easy. :/

Ogre Battle and Tactics Ogre are not the same game.

Tactics Ogre is the game that's similar to FFT, Ogre Battle is not. I like both games a lot, but I think I actually like Ogre Battle more because there's so many different characters, items, and endings. It's an incredibly replayable game and just one of the greatest games I've ever played. I'm ashamed that I forgot about it during my original posting.

Hench why the topic is favorite rpgs

I think i'd lynch my self if i could say riviera is my absolute favorite rpg with a straight face.

_______

Speaking of rpgS, next one i'll mention, that nobody's mentioned yet,

is Lufia II on snes.

Lufia was awesome cause it was a pretty solid puzzle rpg. The battle system was pretty (read: completely) textbook, but the puzzles were kool. Granted, they're dated now, I still have lots of love and respect for Lufia since I say that the day of the puzzle-rpg is basically gone. And no, i dont count the corney ass "puzzles" in most games today, except for Tales of Legendia. That fucking puzzle booth was evil in the endgame.

FFT was actually a pretty challenging game until... you get the most overpowered mandatory character in all of rpg history... Orlandu... I remember getting him and being like wtf??? is this for real? lol

FFT was actually a pretty challenging game until... you get the most overpowered mandatory character in all of rpg history... Orlandu... I remember getting him and being like wtf??? is this for real? lol

i actually had to make fft hard to get any challenge cause the ai is just horrid.

It uses no sense of tactics, and always goes for the weakest/closest person rather than the biggest threat or the "lifeline" of the team (priest/chemist/healer of some sort). I mean, its understandable if your whole party had item as their second job (or you were doin the Single Class Challenge as chemst or priest, LOL!).

In all honesty, the only fight in the game that I say is hard, regardless of how you do is, is the Ramza vs Wiegraf 1v1 fight. 'cause THAT fight, you either have to be overpowered or have a greater range than him.

...... straight job and single class challenges, man those were fun. And the Ramza only challenge. D:

That reminds me that I had a straight job challenge goin last year, and I stopped when....... Atelier Iris 2 came out.

________________________

Atelier Iris 2....... --sigh-- I like the original so much better.

Dont get me wrong, the second one was cool and all, but I didnt like the "new" battle system. It's just a twist on Grandia's system..... in reverse.

A majority of the story was irrelevant, which is just hilarious. I mean, there are plenty of games that you play where you FEEL like there was no point in what you did, but you know that it has some "cheesy" meaning deep down inside. Oh not this game. There LITTERALLY is no point to most of the story.

Then the characters..... were just bland. I constantly kept thinkin of Noin as Lita throughout the game (damn I wish Lita was in AI2) buttttttt...........

... The saving grace to AI2, though, is the fact that it's a prequel to AI, and I like how it's setup as a prequel. They never flat out tell you it's a prequel, and if you dont pay attention to Viese's side of the game (which everybody knows is the slower/dryer side of the game), you can completely miss it.

I think it's funny how the only 2 characters I like from the party (Viese and Poe) have some kind of tie to AI.

I love that people are saying Legend of Legaia, what a freaking game that was. Epic.

I've said it in other threads and I'll say it again, Tales of Symphonia is the best RPG of the PS2/Xbox/GCN generation. Fight me if you think different.

ToS the best of the this generations consoles? I would have to go with DQVIII that game is the definition of epic... game isn't as deep as DQVII (but what game is???) but it is a monster of a game... old school gameplay with new school graphics. DQVIII IMO is rpg of the year so far... but I havn't finished FFXII yet and its only getting better for me... might be a close race this year not to mention twilight princess which i havnt gotten a wii yet =(...

Also I've seen Rogue galaxy in action from my japanese friend and that game looks very very promising

DragonQuest VIII was the same-old, same-old. It's epic in the sense that it's old, and had nothing new to offer at all.

Give me an RPG where I can play with up to 3 other people interchanging at any time, has a better story for my money, and has a more exciting battle system with less random battles.

Valkyrie Profile.

Awesome, mad fun gameplay. Catchy, fun battle system. Cant get enough of it.

It's just awesome to get that 4 person combo and build up the gauge, then completely jack the computer 4 specials.

Kool story too. Pretty deep and has that "open ended" feel.

Suikoden 2 easily! The game has one of the best villians I have ever seen, a shame the game was very easy to beat... Even though I know this forum is for console games, I can't help but type about the best damn RPG I have ever played nay experienced that being Planescape Torment! The setting, The Atmosphere, the fact the story isn't about saving the planet/kingdom. It was about finding out who the nameless one really was... It has some of the best dialogue I have ever witnessed in a game, plus you have a cool talking skull.

Dear god the end of that game picked up; FAST, and it only got better and better.

Sweet action rpg, with (i think) the same system as Tales of Symphonia (dunno if ToS has the field effects)

I can say, all in all, that's the most i've been interested through a RPG since ...... hell, since Atelier Iris and Disgaea (1, dear god not Disgaea 2)

The middle of the game is extremely story driven; there were hours inbetween fights, but the story was pretty good and pretty well-developed.

Thing that sucks, i think; is that there's no end game, but just a new game plus.

SNES- ChronoTrigger - amazingggggggggg, who can forget fighting:http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/45/CTLavos.jpg

SNES- Mario RPG - was really fun back in the day.

SNES- Shadowrun - was based off a real RPG like D&D called Shadowrunner was awesome you could upgrade yourself with robotics and magics etc was super awesome.

N64- Zelda: Ocarina of Time - so much fun, actually replaying it right now.

PS- Legend of Legaia - was a lot of fun and I really liked the battling

PS- Final Fantasy 7- no need to explain, just awesome

PS- Final Fantasy 8- lots of people give me shit for this but I love this game. I can honestly say I may like 8 more than 7. :O

PS- Final Fantasy Anthologies: Just a re-release of FF5 and FF6 (or FF3/4 in USA I think..) Even though the graphics are pretty rough, I had some of the most fun ever playing these.

I didnt enjoy 9 because not a fucking thing made sense, the quest changed every 15 minutes. Then at the end, some random guy theres been no mention of throughout the game comes out of no where and literally says, "well, time to end the world now!"

The only thing I didn't like about 8 was how the enemy changes toward the end, so there was no real development of her. Plus the game had to fill in the shoes of FF7, which it just didnt do. Not developing the enemy as an important character seems to be a mistake a lot of stories make.

Anyobody that knows me will say I'm biased towards all suikoden games...and well it's true. Couple things to point out though.
FF8>ff7 only because of the switch in characters and classic story...gameplay and everything else lost to ff7 though

Wild arms hasn't been mentioned and the first one for psx was a decent game.

Also in suikoden 2...you can't classify LUCA blight as the best bad guy simply because he died in the first quarter of the game. One thing Suikoden games are excellent about though is the fact that they focus a specific COUNTRY or KINGDOM as the bad guy, they have multiple mini bosses/bad guys throughout the games though, such as Luca Blight, Neklord, Yuber, etc...

For old school classic strategy rpg's the best one IMO is a game called Dragon Force for the sega saturn.....Brigandine for the psx is a close second.

I've never really PLAYED any of the Wild ARMs, but i did play a little of 4, and sooner or later im going to get 4 cause i love the battle system in it.

I played about half an hour of it (on my friends game) and I was hooked. The hex system is just great, imo.

My friend also showed me some of Wild ARMs 3, and i although i didnt see much of it, i did like the gimmick of horseback battles. I just thought that help add some flare and character to the series.

I've never played Brigandine, but I heard about it.

As for Dragon Force, that was the ONLY game I had on my Sega Saturn (actually, i think i had nights, but never played it, i dont even remember cause i never asked for it)

But Dragon Force, oh man. I wouldnt specifically go as far as to call it a strategy RPG, (more of just a strategy game), but damn that game was fun.
It was just frickin awesome to take down an enemy general and use him/her to rip their own country to shreads.

Chrono Trigger
Breath of Fire - not sure which number it was. Was on snes. Can't say really why I liked it. I'm more a fan of the snes type rpg's because the majority of the ones I've played were on snes.
Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy VII - never finished it.

I bought playstation for the sole purpose of playing FFVII but stopped playing for a while and when I started again I couldn't remember what I was supposed to do. Dragon Quest VIII is/was cool but like FFVII I stopped playing after playing it for like 3 weeks straight. Luckily I remember where I'm at and what I'm supposed to do in case I finally start playing again. I've got this knack of spending too much time leveling up to the point where I get through bosses real easily but I think it gets boring so that's part of the reason I stop playing.

consolecrusader

Star Ocean for PSX was also an awsome game going to level 265 was fun!

Also yes Wild Arms should get some recognition with FFVII as bringing a new era of RPG gaming to the console world, but the story line was very bland...FFVII had a great story with tons of twists and turns and summons and bosses were awsome.....Where would RPG's be right now if not for those 2 games?

But all in all Xenogears would have to be #1 on my list....greatest story in history of RPG's...and the Xenosaga series (minus 2 YUCK) was awsome.

WA4 is the most retarded game... if WA4 is your first fray into the WA series let me tell you that WA4 is the oddball in the series... In no way shape or form should it be considered a wild arms game, it is so vastly different from the other games... That being said I loved the original and WA3 did add some flare to the game and series... In a way WA4 is the "legendia" of the wild arms franchise...

Since some people have bringing up some srpg's i'll bring up another that has not been mentioned front mission 3 was totally ownage!!!

Front mission 3 was pretty solid. I liked it a lot actually. Enough to buy Front Mission 4, which was good, but the storyline not so much.

Dogysamich
November 30th, 2006, 04:10 PM
Front Mission 3 was kool for three reasons. (imo)

1) it is a sRPG with wanzers (mechs), meaning your movement would naturally be different just cause of how they operate (boosters and whatnot), and your weaponry is different (you start with guns as opposed to just about every other sRPG)

2) I like how the skill system was setup. It did suck that you had to find the speciifc skill on the part before you could use it, but it basically kept you from abusing the game..... obviously excluding Salvo and Body Smash

3) Although the story wasnt exactly top-notch, I liked how they did a good job of keeping it going. I swear there are like, 5 or 6 different places where the game could end, and it would make perfect sense to the game to end, but something's happens, and you keep having to fight a lil' farther.

__

Now speaking of Front Mission 4, i've had it for like.... 2 years or so, and never played it, cause I got caught up with other sRPGS and have never had the drive to play it. I let my friend play it, and watched him for a while, and was completely turned off by it. Just doesnt seem as fun. :/

I did hear, however, that they're makin a Front Mission 5, although I dunno if it's slated to come over here or not.

--double post, sorry--

I'll take a stab in the dark and say you're talkin about BoF2. D:

WA4 is the most retarded game... if WA4 is your first fray into the WA series let me tell you that WA4 is the oddball in the series... In no way shape or form should it be considered a wild arms game, it is so vastly different from the other games... Since some people have bringing up some srpg's i'll bring up another that has not been mentioned front mission 3 was totally ownage!!!

also has anybody played the new mana game on ds? how is that... i wanna pick it up

First off. I understand WA4 isnt exactly a text-book Wild ARMs game; that's the one thing I like about it. Granted, Im not saying I like it for being unique in the series, but more because the battle system is unique period.

I'm personally a fan of new ideas. I dont like completely outlandish, crazy off the wall ideas (like most of these new GBA rpgs that look like hot garbage), but I am a fan of some sort of a new way or new "gimmick" to a battle system, if you will.

The other thing i really like in rpgs, which is in WA4 (or in the beginning of it, atleast, I dunno if it stays the same throughout) is having characters with strengths and weaknesses. I absolutely hate games like FF7 and a bunch of others where you can have anybody do anything.

So, although it is true, i can safely say by looking at WA4 in comparision to the other Wild ARMs, it does NOT fit into the series, i still say it's a pretty kool and interesting game, nonetheless.

__________

Second

I've played a bit of Children of Mana on DS, and it's good so far. I cant really talk much about it cause I havent gotten hardcore about it, but as of now it seems aight. I'll give you more on that when I get into it.

__________

And third

Speaking of sRPGs again, I'm gunna mention another one of my favorites.

Now, lemme finish talkin before you jump down my throat, cause i completely understand why anybody would say WTF as soon as you read this.

One of my favorite sRPGS would definately have to be Phantom Brave.

Now dont get me wrong, the story is pretty terrible, and I know it. How can you really enjoy playing a game where your main character is a phantom-seeing emo girl?

But again, the story isnt the main thing I look for when I play a game, it's the gameplay, and that's where I find the fun in Phantom Brave.

The whole innovation of using a sphere system instead of a grid system is great, even with the little glitches (accidentally walking off a ledge when tryin to cut a corner), but all in all, i thought it was presented and executed well. I also like the use of phantoms and having to attach them to objects. I say it added an interesting element of strategy since you had to not only figure out what object will give your phantom the greatest stat boost, but which item will let them do a good amount of damage in however many turns are alloted.

The next thing that had me hooked on Phantom Brave is the reoccurance of things. Since it was the next game after Disgaea, it was awesome to see some of my favorite attacks return and have new traits (except for Diminsion Slash, i wish they wouldnt have made that a range-only attack). It was also pretty sweet how the endgame started (technically continued) the tradition of using characters from older games. It helps to breath a little new life to some old characters.

The last thing I like about Phantom Brave is just the wide variety of strategies you can use to go through the game. I personally went through the game how (i think) most people would; using Marona to summon phantoms, specifically Ash, to break everything down while Marona hangs in the back. I had one friend go through the game, and used Marona as front-line support while the phantoms, mostly mages did all the work. Then I had one more friend, who didnt even use phantoms, he just stumbled across a kick-ass vase and went to work solo.

All in all, whether you love her or hate her (read, whether you hate her or wish she would die), it's pretty easy to look past Marona and have fun with the elements that make Phantom Brave a pretty unique sRPG.

It definately isnt one of my favorites, and i dont care for it too much, since you can beat it in a day easy, it was just, nothing really catchy about it.

A boy and his dog travel to 4 areas, and his dog keeps changing breed.

And everybody has evil alter egos and shit.

--shrug--

I dunno, when I think about it, everypart did have a section that was stupid. The sequence of getting through the volcano in the first area (having to back track for mud peppers after every levitate spell was just dumb). Then having you and the dog split up in the pyramid. Then the maze. And then being split up again at the end.

Definately didnt make for an enjoyable game, but i never would peg Secret of Evermore as the worst rpg, or even a bad one.

man i love this game. the actual story part of the games a little short (just finished at just under 20 hours) the end game is what i play it for (i love the cavern of trials and the item creation in this game). also on my previous games i seemed to have made the mistake of having a mage in my party. having claude, dias, ashton and rena is easy mode.

i would say no because only with the human side can you really have a formidable party for the end game (all the guild leaders, forgot their names). you get really screwed non human as far as party members go, theres like one good one and the main character girl (only reason ive played through non human) isnt even usable most of the time.

Ridley... that damn bitch kept using my volty attacks at the beginning of the game. :/

I didnt have a real good party at the end of the game. Hell, i dont think I did much in the game, unless there is no extra stuff to do.

I know for a fact that on the last boss, it actually helped me to let my party die and fight the boss 1v1, since i was wasting items tryin to keep them healed.

I really enjoyed this game. The obvious connection is to Secret of Mana, of which it falls far short, but is still quite fun. It's got some problems, e.g. bugs - there are several places where you can get completely stuck.

Bosses are pretty cool, graphics/sound are great, story is so-so. The Nobilia trade market is well made. The alchemy system is fairly involved but the truth is you can get by the entire game with only a few spells (healing water, 1-2 attacks, and the necessary ones like Levitate).

Overall, not a "top" game, but definitely a good one.

it got terrible sales, i think 30,000 copies worldwide, and the game was fucking terrible and hard to play, but like I would tell my friend that sat and played it for a disgusting amount of time with me, if this game was a movie I would gladly pay 10 bucks for a movie ticket and 25 for the DVD

its a first person martial arts type fighter, but your character is integrated basically seamlessly so that you find yourself in situations where you think you are witnessing a cutscene because the action is so fluid, but you can really jump right in and fuck shit up too

its great doing stunt rolls and backflips in first person, and the chick who plays alongside you in the game does her matrix style shit, disappearing, teleporting, running off walls and slicing people up with a knife so fluidly, I spent more time watching than playing
