Having a big lan (12 or so close friends) this winter break and we need ideas for good games. Preferably coop but anything will do. So far we're playing...
wc3 custom maps
quake 3
jedi knight 2
serious sam 2
company of heros
sven coop
any suggestions would be great. please don't say diablo 2 since we already considered it and decided against. oh, and we're on the fence about the new worms game.

He said with his friends and I doubt they're all tfc players so he would run circles around them and they wouldnt have fun. I have experience in this since all my RL friends suck hardcore at tfc. Great CS players tho LOL!
the specialists would be cool for DM
Yes.

Yeah, it's another HL mod, but it is incredibly fun on a LAN. Natural Selection. Honestly, this is the funnest game I've played while LANning.

HK']wc3 custom maps
Enfo's is retardedly fun for how basic it is. Good lan game until your mind fizzles out from the same repetitive yet somehow addicting shit you do over and over.
It should take up like 5-6 hours, tho.

yea we fuckin love enfos. its so fun. you gotta get a good version tho cause some are insanely unbalanced.
escape tfc maps might also be a good idea since i completely rape them in ctf TFC and escape maps are so darn silly.

ofc ;). the imbalanced versions make me sad. i forget the version me and my lan buddies play but its really well balanced between classes and probably the funnest one i've played. if you want ill look it up.

warpath is amazing in a small lan setting where noone knows tfc. we used to play like 3v9 warpath with the 3 best tfcers on 1 team and the people who didnt know what they were doing on the other. it was amazing.

It's a little old now, but my friends and I had a BLAST playing AvP on a LAN. Easy to get going too: it's a small game and you can copy it from hard drive to hard drive and it still works fine.

Babo Violent (http://www.rndlabs.ca/bv2/downloads.php)
Fun and free game: think 2D top-down view quake 3. It's one of those instantly accessible games where you are pretty decent within 5 minutes of playing - perfect for a LAN party.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein is a great lan game. We used to have lans all the time, and while we planned on playing other games, it usually ended up with intense games of RTCW all night. 6v6 is perfect for it.
Best part is, I think you could install it on one machine, and then just drag that installation to other machines on the network and it worked fine.
Nobody cared when they lost in other games, but damnit if our team lost in RTCW there was a ton of finger pointing and random bitching, it was awesome.

RTCW is objective based, capture the secret file, blow up the control tower, etc.
We used to always play it at LANs too, I didn't like it because it was too noobish and I was at the height of my TFC love affair.

Renegade']i was thinking of getting avp...is it still worth getting? do ppl still play it online?I don't know if people still play it online. It's a fun game, and you could probably find it on Ebay or in the bargain bin for like 10 bucks these days, so ya, I'd say its worth getting.

http://www.hidden-source.com/
3rd party steam mod
Probably my favorite steam game and the community isn't huge but there's always active servers or you can make your own and play between 12 guys.
Beano recommended this to me back when it was in it's first beta version.
Hidden is basically a 1 v all type game. There is one hidden who is hard to track down (he bends light like the predator so you got to look closely to find him - which looks like http://www.hidden-source.com/media/ingame/IRIS_Members_12.jpg). Some gay servers have pigstick enabled which is basically a stab that if timed correctly can decapitate a person in one thrust. The traditional slash attack is the way most of the upper talented players play. The rest of the people who have to kill subject 617 are basically on a swat team. You pick you character, your gun, a pistol and you accessory like a laser for the gun (no crosshairs so a laser acts as one) or a flashlight etc...
The hidden wipes out an entire team, he gets all the points and gets another go at hidden until someone kills him. The person who kills the hidden gets to be the hidden.
The Hidden has like this super jump ability where he can jump 2 stories high, hang from the ceilings, jump around high and fast, can stab the bodies to get health out of them, see the heat through walls when he stands still, and can even hang bodies from ceilings and shit.
The game is pretty fucking scary when you're running around these dark gloomy levels and it's hard to see this thing. When I've lanned and played this there was often a lot of screaming and yelling hahaha...

Yeah, like ian said, its objective based, capture this flag further into the map so your team respawns there, grab documents from a room, and take them to the command center. Or blow something up with a bomb, etc.
4 classes
Medics distribute health packs, and have light firepower
Engineers have light fire power, and plant bombs to destroy objectives or diffuse them if you're on the defending team
Soldiers have a wider selection of guns than any other class, but they're mostly gimmicks it seems like. In our group almost nobody ever found them to be very useful except in certain situations.
Lieutenants distributed ammo, and could call in air strikes, decent firepower as well
Oh and STK, that sounds fucking awesome.

By the way...
Does anybody know how LANing with steam works? I've tried googling it but couldn't find any good answers. Can somebody whos actually done it with about 10 people let me know how its done. ie- do we each need a seperate account, etc?
Thoth
December 7th, 2006, 02:07 PM
I'm almost 100% sure you'd all need your own accounts, and to be connected to the internet to auth with the steam servers, but I could be wrong on that part.

December 7th, 2006, 03:09 PM
you can play in offline mode, i think...i rememeber reading something about this because of all the teams that needed to use steam at CPL...yet there was no connection to the internet or somesuch business...
[GoW]HK
December 7th, 2006, 03:24 PM
i AM pretty sure you don't need to be connected to STEAM to do it... I seem to remember last time we tried we could have like 3 or 4 people on 1 account at a time.

think i found the answer.
http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:B61Z73qMrg8J:forums.filefront.com/showthread.php%3Fp%3D3362485+steam+LAN+game&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=5&client=firefox-a
apparently you can but you have to be in offline mode. that makes sense cause i guess this way you bypass the steam auth server.
edit- is there an easy to way to start steam in offline mode? i can only think of starting it then disabling internet connection.
