View Full Version : cheapest/fastest way to earn the GED
Qs1
December 4th, 2006, 10:27 AM
My fiance has recently been looking for a way to get her GED. She is 23 years old and dropped out of high school after her father died. Because alot of drama and nonsense, that I wont get into right now prevented her from a diploma. We both work full time jobs to pay bills (mine being more lucrative)
I am aware she can attend the college but money is tight right now this close to xmas. my family told me there are government programs etc to help but i cannot seem to find anything.
any help would be appreciated.
thanks

In Ohio, the GED only costs $40.00 to take. It is probably similarly cheap elsewhere. The test itself is a joke that only someone with the intelligence of an amoeba could fail to pass. Have your fiance sign up for the test and take it. In my opinion, it is not a big deal.

don't listen to this ......... The test is easy but if you've been out of highschool for a couple of years you do need to study for it. only 30% of the HS graduates in my state can pass our GED test.

overconfidence usually does nothing but come back to bite.... probably best to suggest to your fiance that she takes it seriously, as breaker suggested

why don't you ask her to try out for the equivalency exam, Its about $50 in ca and from what people tell me. its alot easier than the ged. And its basically equaivalant to a hs diploma, but only in CA.

Depending on what state you live in, its different.
For California, the test is called the "California state proficency exam" and gives you your GED. The test is extremely easy as i've been told from a few friends who took it. The math level is about 8th grade level (pre-algebra) and the english reading and writing is about the same caliber. the test shouldn't be hard if she passed a few years of high school with moderate ease.

i took the online exame for free just goofing and passed but its a joke they want $200 for the ged. my fiance is extremely smart, just not book smart if you catch my drift. the community college here only offers day classes and well, thats just not an option. thanks for the help and any more suggestions would be awesome.

I took mine at an Adult Education Center that was owned by a local university. I never went to highschool, i dropped out at 16 because of truency issues that had me in the court system, jail, bootcamps etc... figured it wasnt worth it if they wouldn't pass me anyways. I studied at the aec for a couple of months then aced the practice test, and maxed out on all but math in the real test. it isn't hard but in kansas it has a moderate amount of everything they teach you at the senior level in highschool, so it doesn't hurt to refresh your memory if you haven't been to HS in a great while. Plus the GED test is not going to be based on the exact same curriculum as the highschool your fiance went to, so she might want to study what they provide for the test. not expensive here, 10 to study for a year at the AEC, 40 for the practice, 60 for the GED. I only studied 2 or 3 days a week for about 2 hours a day. Doesn't take much commitment, and it will help her make more money in the long run.

id call ur community college again and see if they have the equivlency. In Ohio you attend class twice a week for 2 hours at night, every 2 weeks is a credit, do it till you have all 20?some credits and its says "so and so graduated from 'your highschool' 2007 " I would imagine most states got this program going considering our atrocious drop out rate.

If school is important to her, I would suggest making day classes an option. I don't know any school out there that only has night classes or is made up of mostly night classes or that has mostly classes that you can take over the internet. Perhaps you could help her through school by taking up another job or working more hours so she could take time off to go to school.
If money is tight, all you really need to do is contact the schools finacial aid office and ask them what sort of programs are available. There are grants for those with a low income and just about anyone can take out a loan. Calling and asking doesn't cost you a dime. Or it would be best to go to the school and talk to them in person.
