The picture is sweet but that announcer sounded like Bill Walton on tranquilizers, Jesus yeah we get the idea, the universe is huge, just show the fucking picture and shut up already.

It's too bad we can't see past ~13.7 billion light years away, so the announcers claim that we're looking at something 78 billion light years away is pretty much garbage. The universe is only ~13.7 billion years old (or rather, we THINK it is)...light from 78 billion light years away has still got about 61 billion years until it reaches us. I'm not even sure where the number 78 billion came from either. The universe has no center and it has no boundries, so it's impossible to give any type of estimates in terms of size, unless they're operating under the assumption that the "shape" of the universe is either closed or hyperbolic. Even taking that into consideration, 78 billion seems like pretty arbitrary number.

When the hubble telescope discovers the center of the universe, a lot of people are going to be disappointed they aren't it.

Yeah, because it's me.

P.S. Don't tell NASA.

Knowing that the universe is so big doesn't change the fact that I have a final tomorrow and I'm lightyears away from being ready D:

hubble: glad they voted appropriations to keep it running.. one of the very best investments, we as a nation, has ever made.. it will be a sad day when they have to put the old spyglass down for the last time...

the pictures are absolutely astonishing, and are opening up new areas in cosmic origins, physics and basically everything we know about the universe.. the only way they should put the hubble down, is when they have something better to replace it.

seriously where did they get 78 million light years from...

no idea on the 78 billion light year thing.. some writer must have just pulled a number out of the hat.. 13.7-14 billion is the best we can get right now..
