Have you ever caught someone trying to cheat off of you during a test (and possibly succeeding)? I can think of several instances of this happening to me, and I am just curious to know how common it is. In my opinion, few things in academia are more pitiful than when someone does that.

my girlfriend had a kid in her Geological Hazards (rocks for jocks) course cheating with his PDA, notecards, and looking off of other people on every exam. she actually got so pissed at the kid that she told the prof. She would study for hours and get 80's and he wouldnt study at all and get 95's (she knew him personally).

I've only caught one kid cheating off me, it was in high school, some douche in Spanish. I caught him cheating, looked at him, smirked, and covered my test.

I've seen it happen in college but the ones I've seen do it don't have much success.

In college I've seen two instances of cheating. One happened on a math quiz...I finished and saw this one girl looking at the paper of the girl next to her, then back to her own. She kept doing that throughout the quiz. I emailed the instructor and he said he'd keep a close eye on her, and that this wasn't the first time she had taken (and cheated in) one of his classes.

Another time happened on an accounting test. The guy next to me had a shitload of notes and formulas on his calculator...must've taken hours to type all that out lol

edy do you really expect us to believe that? i'd bet that you haven't even done that once (no one fucking does, everyone just says they do to try to sound clever).

edit: and my friend used to cheat off of my tests but i didnt really mind, he needed the good grades to bump his gpa.

i think some of us don't want our degrees devalued by schmucks who can't hack it. others are just, you know, honest.

that's not to say i won't give or take 'help' on a meaningless homework assignment, but quizzes/tests/papers are different.

this girl got caught cheating 5 minutes into our philosophy final this morning, she had a crib sheet, the teacher came up to her, took her test and pointed out the door.

i've never seen anyone caught before.

on my final last week i helped 2 of my friends pass the class. i dont really give a shit if people cheat off me (well that is if i know em and know that they're doing it)

a group of brownies last year teamed up on a sociology final. because of scheduling conflicts the final was in a lecture theatre not in a gymnasium setting, so the first one would finish his exam (it was multiple choice) and pass out the scantron sheet. it was so blatant all of us who were behind them snickered, so pretty much half of the class knew. i dunno if anyone told the prof. not to be racist or anything ( :o ) but, most of the stories i've heard from others about cheating were about brownies. so i make sure i stay away from brownies.

Did it all the time in high school.. my junior year in chemistry my friend who was a genius sat near me and a few friends and he put all the answers in the TI-83 calculator and passed it around so we all could get them. we only did this because our teacher never had any clue what was going on.

i havent seen anyone try to cheat off me or anyone else in college yet though. i sorta cheated once on my history midterm tho.. just wrote some dates on my hand so i could remember them exactly.

The cheating in my program is getting out of hand, really. Some examples:

- Answers programmed into/written on a calculator
- A prof's briefcase was rummaged through and papers taken
- Someone peeled the label off a water bottle, wrote answers on the inside and glued it back on
- One idiot wrote all over his arms and wore a long-sleeved shirt. How he expected to pull that one off, I don't know.
- On a multiple-choice exam, 2 guys I know thought up a method of tapping the table to share answers and pulled it off.

Then there's the usual methods of looking at other people's papers and whatnot.

On a side note, when my dad was in engineering school in the seventies, some Hungarian guy, during an exam, leans over him from behind and says in a heavy accent: "Hey buddy, can I copy?"

Isn't the point of going to school to learn it for yourself? Yup, but that it's evident to those kids in high school who don't want to be there. Going to college and cheating is pretty retarded. Although there could be a few instances which it could be understandable.

- Answers programmed into/written on a calculator
Funny thing is I had to do that in one of the hardest college classes I had once. Since the calculator was a TI-82, the process was so painstaking that by the time I had all the equations programmed into it I had essentially memorized them all by then. ^_^

I've only had issues with cheating in two classes in college ever.

1) I took a Pathology class my sophmore year where about 10 students were cheating on the exams together. They would all sit in the same row right next to each other and plainly cheat throughout the exam. They got away with it only for the first exam, because our exams were not supervised by the professor, only the TAs. The TAs got so many complaints that they finally did something about the group of cheaters during the second midterm, and I have never seen any of those students on campus since they were escorted out of the lecture hall in chain gang fashion in the middle of a midterm.

2) I had someone personally ask me if they could cheat off of my exam in International Marketing my junior year. I had worked on a group project with them, and essentially had done all the work myself. They took this as a sign that I was a bitch, and was fully willing to let them sit next to me and copy my answers. I intentionally failed her by answering the questions wrong on purpose on the hard copy of the exam, and correctly on the scantron form, which she never got to see. The sad part is that she must have been at least 40 years old, and had two children.

from my experience at teaching at universities is that people cheat, to some extent all the time.
Often it is a good kid who is getting nervous and just looks at another test, to compare answers maybe? Others its more blatant. Usually its obvious but most of the time the prof/ta just gives a warning. And the ones that do get reported for cheating are usually not mentioned because they face serious consequences. But it happens more than it should. At least from what I experience with premeds. It seems to be, in my experience, independent of the school (small lib, large state, ivy, etc).

You don't fucking take classes and expect to get by on someone elses work. If you aren't doing your own work, you get what you deserve.

People bitch way too much when it comes to tests and assignments. I can't tell you how many times I've heard shit like "man I studied for this thing for like 3 hours and still failed1!!" or "I've been working so much I can't study!!" I work Fri/Sat/Sun/Mon and and maintain relatively normal social life and I still find plenty of time to do my work and study occasionally...and if you're studying for 3 hours and still failing tests, you either don't belong in college or you're studying wrong. If someone wants help understanding a concept or wants me to explain something to them, I'm more than happy to try and help. Just this morning I helped a guy that I absolutely can't fucking stand with an equation for our meteorology final for a good 10-15 minutes.

Problems at home? Problems at work? They're still you're problems, not mine. Don't make excuses, and keep your eyes off my fucking test.

Wow, that's fucking cold. And five flavors of hilarious.

and if you're studying for 3 hours and still failing tests, you either don't belong in college or you're studying wrong.

I agree with this for the most part, but I know some people who have actually managed to overstudy (don't ask me how, I study for about 2 hours for a test and usually come out fine) and end up fucking themselves over because they tried to cram too much too quickly.

a student i kind of knew in my geology lab class used to copy off of my topography worksheets; a bunch of us used to work together at the same table and divided the work up evenly, but the student who was copying off of us was not doing any of the work at all

during our topography midterm, you could really tell that the student was struggling because he did not know the material, tough luck

The other day this guy in one of my Economics classes randomly comes up to me (never said word 1 to me all semester) and tries to play the "hey we were in Speech class last year together" card, after which he asks me if I could let him copy my notes from the class that day. Turns out that he didn't take the exam we had taken previously and the professor was giving it to him that day, so he wanted the answers that the professor was giving us. I didn't get that, so when he came back into the class (the prof sent him out while giving us the answers) I just ignored him and told him that the prof didn't give specific answers. It was a polite way for me to say that I wasn't going to help him cheat when I spent like 10+ hours studying for the exam, and he can bite me.

As far as trying to look at my exam papers in class, I usually guard my papers pretty well to prevent it. There is no way I am going to let somebody mooch off of the benefit of my countless hours of hard work because they are too lazy.

do you realize how believable xero's is as opposed to edy's? right, so you what, memorize all the right answers on the multiple choice after doing them, put wrong answers, then change them all to the right ones?

or are you insinuating that he takes the entire test, erases it, and takes it again? is he just that fast and smart?

at least in xero's story, he's doing the real test on one sheet while marking fake answers at the same time on a different sheet, which makes perfect sense.
