So I got enough money for christmas that I can now afford to buy a guitar rather than stealing my roomates. The thing is, I don't know anything about brands or what kind of guitar to get. So, what should I look for in terms of brands? Also, let me know a reasonable amount so I know I am not getting ripped off. Oh yeah, I am buying an acoustic guitar, not an electric.

I just got one for Christmas and it's in the mail right now...

This guy has sold over 1600 guitars with nothing less than a 100% feedback rating from each item sold. He sells his brand that new builds himself (Zager) and buys low-end Martin guitars and customizes them himself.
I got a Zager because he builds it from scratch modifying it so it it is easy to play.
Can't wait to get it, all the reviews praise the guitars.
But anyway there are electric acoustic models of Zagers and Martins that this guy customizes... Just click my link then click his name so view his other auctions.

If you don't play that much, don't bother buying an expensive guitar. If you don't plan on using an amp, put the extra on a better guitar. As far as brands are concerned, it really depends on the sound you're looking for and that depends on your tastes. But if I had a suggestion to make for a very good and not too expensive accoustic guitar, I would recommend the Jasmine brand which is made by Takamine, and I personally think they sound really good. But anyway, if it's just for fun and nothing remotely professional, it doesn't really matter because the guitar doesn't make the player.

If you think you're going to stick with playing for the long haul (it sounds like you do since you play your roommate's), don't buy a real cheap one to start. It's not going to sound very good most likely and in a year your going to want to buy a new one. Just skip the beginner level guitar and get a moderately priced one. As far as which brand to go with, a lot of that depends on what kind of sound you want. I'd recommend not buying one online, go to your local Guitar Center and try a few out and see what sounds and feels right.

I don't know how much you want to spend, but I just bought a Seagull S6 (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Seagull-The-Original-S6-Acoustic-Guitar?sku=512120) and so far I really love it. That's $380 and it was $400 at the store. However, if you deal with eBay at all and have a little patience, you can get a great deal. I got mine brand new in box for $240 total. This is the seller. (http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZjackwinstonQQhtZ-1) He sells a number of them, but they go very fast with buy it now when they're posted. Everything I have heard and read says Seagull makes some of the best guitars for the money. And at the price I paid, it's even more true.
Like others have said, don't bother buying something really cheap. I think that route does one of two things. You'll either be turned off from playing it because it's hard to play and sounds bad, or you will play it and after a while realize it's hard to play and sounds bad so you'll want a better one.

suck a dick.
anyways, my friend got a decent acoustic for about 150$ from a local shop. it sounds fine, and if this guy is just starting, might as well go cheap first. but like themob said, go to your local music shop and if you know how to play somewhat, try out their selection of guitars. you can even have one of them play for u if they know how, which they should.

i think all qs was saying that if you're serious about learning to play, and want a life-long hobby, you're better off actually spending a bit more and getting something that will sound good (for extended periods of time) and will last you a couple years. 150$ guitars are known to be very bad.
that being said, everyone starts out thinking they're the next vai, so if you're dedicated and know you love to do it, its worth spending the money. known brands would be better for service.

Epiphone Masterbilts are pretty hot for their price range.
Same with the Taylor Big Babys.

a great middle of the road company = Takamine or Yamaha, I also would suggest getting the guitar "setup" so you have decent action.

I already know your opinion on guitars and know enough to summarily ignore anything you say on the subject.
As for the rest of you guys, thanks, I plan on heading to a shop as soon as I get home and messing around. I will prolly check on e-bay to see if I can find any of the ones I like, and if not jsut grab it at the store.

personally, i'd probably get a Martin if i was looking for a really good acoustic. but your best bet is to go to a guitar shop and just try a bunch out.

do yourself a favor and dont buy any instrument until you've played the one that you're buying.

Telos - I just bought a brand new Yamaha F335, all black. $150 Plays nice, easy to fret, nothing fancy. Kinda doesn't stay in tune very well, imo, but I am pretty anal about being in tune. I've been casually playing guitar on/off for years, and if I do decide to get serious I'll buy something nicer.

you're dumb qs
if hes just starting, why should he spend more money on a guitar. what if he hates it and cant learn, or chooses not to get lessons, then it will just be a waste of money.

if you can learn to play well on a piece of shit, it makes you that much better when you dish out the cash for a nice guitar.
