Ah, I have to host my first New Years party. People are expected mixed drinks. What are some universal liquors/ingredients I should have readily available? I don't typically keep a lot of liquor.

Keep in mind also that most of the people will be girls, so girly drink ingredients are swell.

Unless you want to spend a lot, just get rail (cheapest) liquor - but get a variety.

Liquor:
Gin, Vodka*, Rum, Whiskey*, and Tequila

Juice:
Cranberry*, Lemon, Lime, Orange

Misc:
Cola* (lots), Sprite, Grenadine, Tonic, Sour Mix, Red Bull*

This will do just fine, but there's plenty of liqueurs which would be the next buy:
Blue Curacao, Jagermeister, Souther Comfort, Triple Sec, Schnapps (different flavors)

* Are important ones.

Can I find Triple Sec and Schnapps at my local liquor store?

December 28th, 2006, 09:21 AM
Yes, you should be able to find it there if its a decently stocked store. Hawk hit most of it right on the head, although i might have starred rum as well, but that is just personal preference. Make sure you don't forget champagne as well.

good call on the champagne. I wouldn't have thought of that.

Absolut for the vodka. Or Greygoose but I'm extremely partial to Absolut

A party without it is a party I shouldn't have been invited to.

Yeah, Hawk summed it up. I'd mark triple sec, blue curacao, and peach schnapps as required though. Especially for fruity girly drinks.

If you're talking vodka for mixed drinks get something like smirnoff. Personally I usually go for soemthing better but Absolut and Stoly will cost you usually $5-7 more a bottle and Greygoose will cost you about $10-12 more for a smaller bottle where I live. It's not much but if you're talking about getting better vodka there's going to be people that want better tequila, rum, etc and then it adds up. Like others said get the fruity crap for mixed drinks for women.

If this is for girls, you're definately going to want some Kahlua. Don't get the cheap brand of that, just get the regular Kahlua.

Kahlua + vodka (absolut is my fav) + milk = WIN

Jack Daniels. Or Dickel if you're going cheap.

That is an excellent drink, my favorite too. Add a splash of coke or Dr. Pepper. AKA Colorado Bulldog.

Higher quality vodkas (the Grey Goose, not the Absolut) should never, ever be used in mixed drinks. That's what rail shit is for.

And if you're going for girly drinks then Amaretto or SoCo usually fit the bill.

i've seen a lot of bad advice in this thread.

the amount of everything you buy all depends on how many are gonna show up, but if you want to throw a party the right way, then you stock your bar like you would if you were if you were a "x" liquor or "x" beer drinker and were going to be going to the party. fuck the well/rail liquors, cause no one really wants to drink that shit anyway...it tastes horrible and makes awful mixed drinks.

take hawk's list from the start of the thread, but change it a bit...keep in mind, stocking your bar for a party isnt cheap, but the booze that doesnt get drank doesnt go bad...you've always got it for your next party if it isnt something you drink.

Liquor:
Bombay Sapphire and/or Tanqueray and/or Beefeater Gin (2 750ml bottles)
Smirnoff (if you're being cheap), Kettle One, Absolute, or Stoli Vodka (3 750ml bottles, or 2 handles)
Bacardi AND Captain Morgan's Rum (1 or 2 handles of each)
Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, Johnny Walker Whiskey (1 750ml bottle of each)
Jose Cuervo Tequila (1 750ml Bottle, unless you know of tequila drinkers that are gonna be there, then get more)

Beer:
tough call, for this you really should know who your guests are and their preferences. for a general party i'd do at least -
2 30 packs of Bud Light (unless you know you'll have Bud drinkers)
1 Case of Heineken
1 Case of New Castle (or some other Ale that's popular where you are)

Juice:
Cranberry(2 gallons), Lime(liter or so), Orange(3 gallons). Grenadine(1 bottle...cant remember what they measure in), Pineapple (liter or 2)

Misc:
Cola (lots), Sprite (lots), Ginger Ale (lots), Tonic (3 liters), Sour Mix(maybe), Red Bull(maybe)

personally, everything up above i'd make sure to get. i'm not sure that i'd bother with the rest of the list, but if you can his is pretty good:

Blue Curacao, Jagermeister, Souther Comfort, Triple Sec, Schnapps (different flavors)

As a bartender, I can tell you alot of the stuff listed can & will get pricey. If you're catering for just a few people, but still expect to get good and toasty to bring in the new year, I suggest you go cheaper.

TAAka Vodka (750ml) $5.99
TAAKa Gin (750ml) $9.16
Castillo Rum (1ltr) $8.99
BolsTriple Sec (1ltr) $6.99
Rose's Lime Juice (1ltr) $3.99
Grenadine (1ltr) $4.99
Crown Royal (750ml) $22.99
Jack Daniels (Or Sunny Brook) (750ml) $20.49
Jose Cuervo (Or Patron Silver/Gold) (1ltr) $21.99
Generic Sweet & Sour $3.59
Blue Curacao (1ltr) $9.99
Midori Melon (375ml) $9.49
Sour Apple/Watermelon Pucker (1ltr) Both $9.99
Peach & Butter Schnapps (1ltr) Both $6.99
Pineapple/Grapefruit/Orange Juice - etc

$145.63 (Without the juice & Tax) Give or take.

^^ That will take care of a majority of your more popular mixed drinks.

Of course, don't forget your $35 bottle of Champagne for midnight.

As far as beer goes...it just depends on where you live like someone mentioned earlier. Bud Lite & Coors Lite (EWWW) are definite high sellers in Texas. I prefer Budweiser...but whatever do what ya want. Bunch of girls drinking? Smirnoff. Bacardi. Wine coolers. Bunch of ice. Shaker. Blender. Case closed.

would two types of whiskey really be necessary? I already have a bottle of crown (the only alcohol I have in my house right now) and don't really see the need to buy jack or regal or whatever.

dakine`
December 30th, 2006, 10:47 AM
2 types is not necessary. Kahlua + vodka + milk only gets you so far and people have some seriously shitty nights with those or at least that has been my experiance. Even though they taste good. Dont get clear tequila, thats just a prefrence but I think clear tequila sucks.

Gin
Rum
Tequila
Vodka
Rye
Scotch
Champaign

Pretty much right there covers your bases. Oh and for beer just drink water cause thats pretty much what american beer is. (osnapez)

Well I already have the beer, Sam Adams Winter Ale. There are only 4 guys of the 14 people attending (12 guests, my wife, and myself) and all of us were out a few weeks ago and enjoyed this beer.

I think I'm settling on the following:
Crown Royal (I already have it)
Vodka of some sort
Bacardi Rum
Peach Schnapps
Orange Juice, Cranberry Juice, Coke, Sprite, Red Bull
Champagne for 12:00AM

With these drinks I can make some standards and some girly drinks, I think I should be good to go. Thanks for all the suggestions.

lol the clearer the tequila the more high quality it tends to be....

And for the love of fuck don't get TAAka vodka. Oh my lord, that shit is horrendous.

I have a question (since some of you seem to know your stuff):

In terms of quality, where does Absolut rank among the other vodkas? I have read that it is just an average vodka that is marketed extraordinarily well. Is that accurate?

Apple Drink:
Bicardi Big Apple($11-$16 for 750ml) + Apple Juice(get the cheap stuff from any grocery store) = Apple Drink
girls love it.

girls love jungle juice too.

this is what is going to be served at my party tomorrow:

2 kegs(for guys)
jungle juice (for girls)
Champagne at midnight (for everyone)

simple, and saves me money

Well since he clearly is buying shitty tequila I thought I would let him know to by amber as apposed to clear. And on the subject of tequila I have had mant good tequila's aswll as a personal favorite mescal (but people have said it is not tequila just a branch of the tequila family (something about the worms in the bottom).
