So far I have 72 confirmed guests coming to my New Year's party on Sunday. I have all of the liquor worked out and in plenty, but I haven't even begun to calculate feeding these people. This is my first year hosting a party of this size so what would be recommended as good food for 72+ people with half of them intoxicated? There are a lot of Italian/Chinese carry-out places around here or should I just go with the old-fashioned chips, dip, pretzels, cheese cubes and the like?

drunk people like to snack.
i dont know your budget, but on top of chips, dips, pretzels, etc, a good start would probably be like 250 wings (buffalo, bbq, whatever...a variety), 6 loaves of stuffed breads, and 9 pounds of large cocktail shrimp (figure 30-40 shrimp per pound, and each person will eat 4-5 shrimp) some large hunk of beef brisket to make sandwiches wouldnt be a bad idea either...just make sure you cook it in a covered pan so it doesnt dry out too much.

I don't have a budget, and thanks for the ideas. That sounds good to me.

go to the local supermarket and get party trays. Fairly cheap and easy. Chicken wings, deli meats and a few loaves of bread, cheese trays, etc.

maybe steak would be nice
are you looking to feed them for dinner or what time are they even coming over?

Steaks for 72 people won't be cheap and even though money isn't an issue that's a lot of time cooking. When you're hosting a party where alcohol is involved the things that go over best are usually finger foods like others said. Not much if any cooking involved and you can have enough of a variety to please pretty much everyone. I like n4p4lm and smacks ideas and I'd say if you don't go a hunk of brisket get something like a party sub instead.

I could, but I'm not sure if I could get a good place to do it at this short notice.

Chex Mix, assorted peanuts, rolls and butter, grapes/other small fruit.
Chicken fingers/nuggets (you can get platters from Chick-fil-A (http://www.chick-fil-a.com/MenuItems.asp?Category=partyTrays))
BBQ Pork
Can't really think of anymore at this time. I have and go to get togethers a lot, but most of the time it is under 20 people. So the assortment of food is somewhat the same, but it's still a lot different. I would tell you some homemade ideas you can do, but you probably won't have time for that.
The best thing to do is look up a local Wings restaurant and just get a few platters of boneless wings and whatever you like on the menu. They make it pretty fast and it can be small or large portions. Most places are 48 hours notice, so call around tomorrow morning.
edit: I really wouldn't do Italian/Chinese, since that's more of a sit down and eat type thing. If everyone is gonna be walking about, you wanna stick with finger foods that you can put on a paper/plastic plate and carry around easily. Have a snack portion (your chex mix, chips, etc), then a small meal type portion (bread, rolls, chicken, etc).

chik-fil-a party platters kick ass, as well as chipolte platters (or any other southwestern gtill type places) and tortilla wrap platters

Buy as many packs of pre-cooked sweet n sour meatballs as you need, and heat em up and stick toothpicks in them. They're delicious, not *too* expensive, and they're easy to prepare.
