Ok this actually won't interest them, but it might help to educate.

I present you with someone's rant on people paying nothing for a graphicz designer like right here on the catacombs!

Hello business-people please read!

Every day, there are more and more CL posts seeking "artists" for everything from auto graphics to comic books to corporate logo designs.
More people are finding themselves in need of some form of illustrative service.

But what they're NOT doing, unfortunately, is realizing how rare someone with these particular talents can be.

To those who are "seeking artists", let me ask you;
How many people do you know, personally, with the talent and skill to perform the services you need? A dozen? Five? One? ...none?

More than likely, you don't know any. Otherwise, you wouldn't be posting on craigslist to find them.

And this is not really a surprise.

In this country, there are almost twice as many neurosurgeons as there are professional illustrators.
There are eleven times as many certified mechanics.
There are SEVENTY times as many people in the IT field.

So, given that they are less rare, and therefore less in demand, would it make sense to ask your mechanic to work on your car for free?
Would you look him in the eye, with a straight face, and tell him that his compensation would be the ability to have his work shown to others as you drive down the street?

Would you offer a neurosurgeon the "opportunity" to add your name to his resume as payment for removing that pesky tumor?
(Maybe you could offer him "a few bucks" for "materials". What a deal!)

Would you be able to seriously even CONSIDER offering your web hosting service the chance to have people see their work, by viewing your website, as their payment for hosting you?

If you answered "yes" to ANY of the above, you're obviously insane.

If you answered "no", then kudos to you for living in the real world....

Different services have varying amounts of importance.

yeah i hate that shit... i'm about to graduate with an associates... and i don't know how many times i've had people ask me to do stuff for free... my family constantly says "hey can't you setup a website for this or that?" and it's just like.... ugh... I've only had 1 actual project/job so far, and i only got 50 bucks out of it... but whatever, it was easy cash....

and this is pretty much the reason i'm going to change my major....
that and i live in south jersey where there's barely any need for graphic artists...

The reason people don't want to pay for real graphic skills is because they don't value or respect them. Especially anyone who sells anything for a living. 99% of all salespeople are brainless cretins who keep a killer death grip on every nickel.

I've put up a few examples of horrible things that stupid customers have sent me to print in the past, but believe me when I say it's only the very tip of the iceberg. People will have their stuff designed by whatever shit-for-brains brother in law has ever heard of a computer rather than pay a tenth of what real artists make. And if all else fails, they'll design it themselves with Publisher or Powerpoint. Then they'll send it to me and expect me to be able to print it.

Hired me? Not personally, they sent it to my office for my company to print. What did you think, I made that card myself?

Ironically, it was from one of our best and least clueless customers (http://www.selpros.com), who usually do pretty good work.

Edit: Qs, at least you're being forced to use it, and at least you have some education in the matter. I'm talking about real estate agents who throw together some Times New Roman-infested abortion of a business card layout, in the upper left corner of a letter-size document, in RGB color, and send it to me without the fonts or embedded images half the time, and expect me to make it into a 3.5"x2" business card on a offset press. And then they call back after they get the cards and bitch because the 0.0.155 royal blue color in the two-capital-letter logo looks purple.

Thus the offset press. I don't know of any that use red green and blue inks. There is hexachrome of course, but we're not all high-end like that.

No currently going to SUNY Alfred, which for being the smallest program in the school.. isnt too bad. But I can't wait to transfer. Theres a few kids the the major that are from Jersey so I guess I was checking to see how small the world is. Not so small today, haha!

yeah jersey has the most people who go away to college, becuase jersey is so populated and they're all rich kids... pretty much everywhere i've ever been, i've met someone from jersey. Even on vacation in mexico... i bet most anyone on here knows at least someone from jersey, depending on the age/what they do.
