When this game was first advertised with a video and pictures the game looked absolutely amazing. Well I'm kind of disapointed, theres a lot of reading for missions, only the main storyline missions are actual spoken dialog but theres a ton of side missions that you must read through and personally I hate reading in video games, makes no sense, if your gonna go through all that trouble to make a good video game why not hire a couple voice actors and make the game that much better. I just finished playing after an hour, the game is ok, nothing special tho. theres a ton of missions so theres always something that needs to be done, the action/shootouts arnt that great unlike games like fear. The game is pretty indepth and entertaining. Graphics are decent but not amazing, fun factor is alright, sound lacks due to unspoken dialog. The world of Stalker appears to be quite large but you cant explore to much due to radiation bounderies which you must equipt anti rad gear, still causes a lot of damage so make sure u bring lots of health when exploring. enemies I have came across so far in the begining are bandits, zombies, boars and dogs. Weapons so far have been pretty basic, a pistol, dual barrell shotty and a sub machine gun. You are a STALKER which seems to be a gun for hire, theres many stalkers in the world within factions, you gain reputation with stalkers by doing missions. Some stalkers become allies, most start off as nuetral and you become enemies with certain stalkers. I plan to play the game without making to many enemies. The game runs flawlessly on my comp which is a 3000+ amd 1gb ram, x800 256. Theres pirated versions all over the net but the game isnt released until march 23rd.
Graphics: 7.5
Sound: 5.5
Gameplay: 7.5
Fun Factor: 8
Storyline: 8
Learning curve 45-60min
Overall: 7.5
Definatly worth playing if your an FPS fan. The game got so much hype but in the end it didnt meet my expectations of a great shooter. As I said I've only played an hour I'm sure I'll get more into the game the more I play but these are my unbiased first impressions.

wow i was gonna go pick this up right when it got released, and I probly still will. But anyways, do you plan on buying it or just playing your pirated copy? Also is there a chance your copy isn't the final? (not that it would be that much diff but still). I'm sure it might take more than an hour to give the game ratings, but thanks for your initial review anyways.

yea its retail. I might buy it once i beat the game and see if the multiplayer is worth it, i only buy games when the multi is awesome, and also all hl2 eps. or games that i incredibly enjoy. 5$ on ebay when games become like a year old, i saw a statistics chart from 1998 of how much games make, kept rising till 2002 when torrents became mainstream and since they've been losing more and more every year. I played a little more lastnight and made it to the 2nd area of the map, liking it more as i play I really just wish all sub missions would be voiced dialog, theres so many sub missions, i dont even read them, just go to the spot on the map and read the small blurb about it

i shouldnt be scoring? and who r u? lol im sure once others play it they will agree on the things ive pointed out. the art, looks alright theres some shitty looking stuff and some good looking aswell, when fighting ppl at a distance it doesnt look that great but some of the detail looks good like the dude u talk to that gives u main missions. im really having mixed reactions, the game lacks a lot of stuff it did have the potential to be a great shooter. ever play WoW? u get a bunch of shitty side missions, u dont read it u just follow the map, like a bunch of the side missions are "buddy left his bag here go check it out" but in a few paragraphs, thats why i skip them and just follow map cuase its boring to read it and its kind of lame. the land is pretty big ive gotten a few more levels into it, its large but the shitty thing u have a wieght limit on what u can carry and u can only sell guns and ammo to the guy who gives u the main missions that ive come across so far, so cant be a pack rat. the idea for the game is, ur a stalker, theres a bunch of stalkers, some in factions some free lance, u do missions kill shit and gain points and theres rankings u start off at like 600 somethin and try to work your way to be the #1 stalker. and the main story which hasnt overly progressed much but im sure they will add in some kool stuff, hopefuly
Gamespot gave it an 8.5, i just dont agree sound getting an 8, they gave gameplay a 9 which i can agree with tho now after playing more indepthly

Not sure why you asked who I am, as if it has anything to do with this thread. I guess it was some e-macho attempt to imply that I am a nobody and you are so great that whatever I have to say is irrevalent. If so, e-mission e-accomplished.
The fact of the matter is that you admittedly played the game for an hour and admittedly don't read any of the story in the side missions. Any responsible reviewer at least gets more than half way through a game before writing a review. And I know for a fact that the better review sources actually beat the game before passing judgment. How can you even fairly rate the story after one hour of play?
Hence I said that you shouldn't be scoring this game.

I'm saying 9/10. At first when I started playing I was dissappointed, but once you get further into the game and start to understand how to play it better, it gets really cool. Furthermore, the game looks unbelievable. I'm running it at max and every once in a while it will get choppy but the photorealism really makes it all worth while. Just wish I could play multiplayer...

it was intended to imply that your opinion dont mean shit. ive been continuing to add info of the game as i said in the review that this is my FIRST IMPRESSION of the game. and why read boring side missions? they are pointless to read as i stated so why would some1 read something they dont want to when it doesnt matter anyways becuase it shows your objectives on the map. so ya stfu and dont comment unless u played it instead of bringing nothing but meaningless negativity to the table, this is a forum to talk about games, not your opinion on how people should rate them.
yea nef you are correct. when you first start playing its kinda like uhhh this isnt to good. but the more you play definatly the better it gets, ive continued to play more and more and ive been likin it more, theres also some wierd creatures in the game and just ran into a a trippy enemy that affects your mind and u start to trip out.

Meaningless negativity? You are the one overreacting about it; not once but twice now. I simply said that you shouldn't have scored the game. "First impressions" don't include scores. You are right, this is a board for talking about games, not passing judgments down that people come here to read and put stock into when you don't even know jack about the game yet. You even admit now that your "first impression" was inadequate. And yet you just can't admit that your scoring of the game was premature. And for somebody like oh say, me, who is coming into the forum to see what people who have played through the game think it is misleading to see a review like this; hence my interest in the thread, as opposed to me being some random jackass who likes to nag as you imply. This is all I am going to say about that, since it is pretty obvious that you just wanted to be the first person to say something about the game.

lol <3 9, true, i have like 12 games currently installed, and my dog hates it when i play games and ignore her lol.
first impressions arent always correct, thats why i said that. i still stand by my original comments about the game, but it does get better the more you play, thats why i continue to post info about it. I'd make 2 changes to my scoring tho, graphics from a 7.5 to an 8 and gameplay from a 7.5 to a 9 sound still sucks tho and the story line and fun factor remain 8's. so even with like 6 additional hours my opinion on the game hasnt changed much besides the gameplay. theres a ton of reviews some say its awesome and some are really disapointed. Play the game, leave a comment thats what the forum is for. 1 review shouldnt mislead you into not getting this game. "Definatly worth playing if your an FPS fan. The game got so much hype but in the end it didnt meet my expectations of a great shooter" its a good shooter, but not a great 1, but hey thats just my opinion, which r like assholes, every1's got 1. oh and im not the first person to make a thread about the game, theres others with like "omg the game is almost out" so if i wanted to be first id be gay and make a meaningless thread. I often make reviews on games and if theres an existing thread that is relavent to the game actually being out id put my review there.

I'm afraid to buy this game because I... acquired... a retail version of it and ran into unsolvable issues with textures ghosting across the sky until the sky disappeared entirely. Updating my drivers and DirectX did jack shit.
Frame rate was phenomenal with all the settings maxed, but the sky was so god damn ugly and distracting that I couldn't suffer through it.

yes, once you start reaching "caves" which i think he ment sewers the game begins to pick up, thats when i started to enjoy the game, and yes the game can be quite buggy, some missions glitch up, random crashes and some audio. the game runs well as nine mentioned on a below average computer, runs flawlessly on mine. and yes certain enemies will take forever to kill due to armor, gotta land that headshot. theres gotta be some conflicting drivers/hardware with you cock, i'm sure within a month there will be a few patches out fixing the minor bugs, whats kind of bugging me is the random crashes. Im pretty far into the game now some of the missions are pretty kool later on like attacking bases with a bunch of npc's.

I am running it on High settings fine. I do see a very small amount of lag when I get into gun fights with 20 guys. I am running it on the below specs...
AMD 3000+ 1.8ghz
Asus A8N-E PCI-E
2gb PC3200 ram
7600GT 256 PCI-E
7200rpm 80gb hd.
The game itself is pretty cool. I am with nine about how long it takes to kill someone. I get into gun fights with 10+ guys, and it takes 3 clips to the chest to kill a guy.... There is plenty to do, I almost get lost while doing a mission, because on my way i forget to do something and have to run back. It's too early to judge, but so far i give it a 7 - 10.

I get graphics glitches like hell, especially when it rains. Models will stick out and continue all way up into the sky. I discovered it was the dynamic lighting that caused it, I turned it to static but I still get those glitches from time to time. Im sick of walking everywhere, Im also sick of trying to find the correct way to get to my objectives. I always have to back track like a hour to find correct way to go, since the objective arrow is bugged and half time never points in right direction or leads me into a radiation zone you cant pass. The overview map is really lacking in points and details. Guns breaking down over time is really dumb and annoy to me, also having to eat food. Ive always been a more run and gun guy. They really need more voice acting, all this reading feels like Doom 3 and at least Doom 3 had some voice audio logs.
On the positive side of things, I think the day night cycle is really cool. The game does truely make you feel like you are there and have to deal with all problems that would happen. Looting dead bodys is pretty cool, Ive never played a game with that before. You can really customize yourself based on what you carry. The differant kinds of suits you can wear is neat. The AI seems very good, especially the animals. Creatures like the bloodsucker are down right scary at night and make for some intense night battles. Having differant factions to join is nice. It looks like you can play the game for years over and over and see new stuff all the time.
I followed the game a long time and I think it failed to live up to the hype, but I do believe it is a pretty good game otherwise. If you like fast action all the time this game is not for you. Its a real survival game, everything you do effects how long or short you have to live. Worst part is, NO COOP. Seriously this game without coop is pointless.

I agree with Malice's first impressions. Like Malice said, the graphics are great at times (skies for example) and shitty at others (weapon models). I don't mind having to read while playing this game, but I have to say that it would be more enjoyable if I didn't have to do so much reading. After playing the game for the first 30-60 minutes, I really wasn't digging it, but I have to say that it gets more enjoyable as you play it more. I still have to say that it definitely hasn't met my expectations, though.
Some complaints:
1. The game is pretty frustrating at max difficulty. As someone has mentioned, it takes a fuck ton of bullets to kill enemies and the weapons you get are very standard (I haven't found a single weapon that is really useful at long range). This makes things tough when you're outnumbered 10:1.
2. The AI is pretty weak in my opinion. For a game that I first heard about five years ago, I was expecting something along the lines of FEAR, but it's not even comparable. I've had several instances where the AI blindly came at me one after another while I was hiding around some corner or in a truck only to get killed in the same exact spot.
3. I have a pretty decent computer but this game runs like shit for me. I had to set the resolution to 1024x768 and graphics to low for it to stop lagging all over the place.
4. Like someone else mentioned, I too can't seem to get nightvision to work, which makes fighting multiple enemies in the dark a bitch.

I think night vision and flash lights may require higher light settings to work at all.
I found out about that and when I went to change it the game froze in the menu.. It happened again after I restarted and I haven't tried since.
There's a patch out for this now that fixes a lot of problems.
Nine
March 28th, 2007, 07:20 PM
Okay I figured out the problem with the flashlight and how to fix it.
If you have your "Quality Settings" at minimum, your flashlight won't work no matter how you adjust the advanced settings. Anything above that includes a working flashlight at increasing quality.
BoSlim
March 28th, 2007, 11:35 PM
Well, I turned off any dynamic lighting and went from low-medium settings with dynamic lighting at about 5-15 fps to static lighting and medium+ settings at 40+ fps, so thats a great relief, and even though static lighting makes trees and stuff not look as cool, its much better to have smooth gameplay. I love this game so far and the open spaces and finding things on your own and using the map makes it much more interesting than "go this way to accomplish this" like most fps. So for anyone having fps issues just go to static lighting for a huge jump in performance.
I just hope that with each patch released you don't have incompatible save games like the first patch did (luckily I was only about an hour or two in and didn't mind starting over).

You guys know you can change your rate of fire, right? Get a rifle with a scope, crouch as low as possible, and set it on semi-auto. I'm currently stuck in the game, though, because I'm trying to get into this lab (X-18 I think) but the radiation is getting me. I think I need a suit but I dropped my radiation suit in order to carry more shit. My log says something about the fact that you can't go in at certain times of day, so that might be it but I don't know. Suggestions?
Edit: I was wrong. It was the brain scorcher and the radiation is just in isolated spots.

I'm at the 2nd lab, just gained entrance, too bad I had to come to work. The first lab freaked me the fuck out, playing it in the dark at 1 am. Holy hell. Those poltergeist things were annoying. This city where the second lab is was pretty sweet looking, the yellow haze and the messed up sounds from radiation I guess. It looks badass. Now I'm down in the pitch dark lab, killed the first set of zombie soldiers by those boxes after the initial room. Can't wait to continue when I get home.

I was waiting for YEARS for this game also. Entered a story "Nevermore" and was told it made the final cut. I couldnt find any stories included with the game.
The game itself is pretty to look at and has nice weather feel as the wind picks up and it starts to rain etc. But the game is so annoying I never got close to finishing it and it sits collecting dust.
Issues:
Bobblehead action. When you walk your head rocks back and forth, back and forth, back and forth just like in FEAR. I got like halfway thru FEAR before the action of the head mad me so focused on it I stopped playing
Annoying ingame menus Ok you start out and get your intel from some sort of trader. This gonna be good.
Then you walk up to bots and have to bring up a menu that covers you screen. Just to chat or see if they have anything you need or should learn.
Get all the way to a point and you have to revive a fallen man. But unlike earlier there is no med kit around. Now you have to kill yourself so you can start at the spawn area and talk to all the bots and trade for one.
MIND you you cant do any of this without bringing up a huge screen.
So unflowing, HL2 blows this out of the water even though it came out years before.
Cant save Ok this part may just be my dumb ass, but I couldnt find a way to save at all the critical points so I dont have to start all over. What is the save key?? It has auto save points that help but are not perfect. Ive looked thru the manual a dozen times and cant find the save key.
Multiplayer sucks Ok it has Team deathmatch and Deathmatch , cant really mess that up, Its mode is an object appears and you try to take it to a capture zone. The spawn point of the object isnt clearly defined nor is the capture zone , no signs like in TFC to help direct you. The bases arent perfectly symetrical leaving one side sometimes with an advantage. I think they just used sp maps for mp.
My advice if your looking for non stop action like in HL2 or Far Cry this shooter isnt for you. But if you love RPG and RTS then you may want to give it a try.

hard to take a review seriously when the person can't figure out how to save it. Also, why compare this to HL2? Its a totally different type of game, and they are both great in their own way. Sure HL2 is more polished but STALKER is very well done as a whole, just can't let the little problems get to you.

LOL man you guys are tuff. People can buy the game and ignore my review. I said if you read it closely it is a great game for players that like what it offers.
Having played a gazillion hours on Half Life and its mods and BF2 and its mods and BF1942, Unreal, FEAR and Far Cry, I know what I like in a game.
Thanks Unfy for letting me know that F5 is the save key, i've looked thru the manual a dozen times and swear its not in it.
Far Cry was amazing SP, but my reviews said its MP sucks. See how many are playing FC MP now.
FEAR was reviewed badly by me also. Then they sold so poorly they had to give it away and buy the rights to promote it from CPL.
I say the Stalker MP will also suffer the same fate as FEAR, but hey if they pay enough to CPL then it will be in next years event. thats my predicitons and Im sticking with them lol.

what an incredible prediction for a game that was made to be single player from the second it was introduced and they did the usual "tack on multiplayer" like a lot of single player fps games do just to say they have it.

The patches they released so far to fix the many bugs in the game havent done shit. If anything the game runs worst now. They really need a patch that actually fixes something.

BoSlim I agree with you. In fact in their forums I had warned the Devs that overlooking the MP community is a mistake. I love a great SP like HL and FC. But after the amount of time playing MP dominates the time playing SP so thats where the value comes in for me.
BF2 doesn't come with a SP epic but who cares, It has great MP action second only IMO to TFC. HL and HL2 came with amazing MP. Had STALKER been near as much fun for me as HL or FC then I wouldn't have minded that the MP sucks.
Let me ask you guys since the release of STALKER a game that came out a decade or so after TFC, do you really think its MP is better then TFC? Hell BoSlim you know Negley, do you think STALKERs MP is better then the one put out for free by the Hostile Intent mod team?
For you guys obviously you love the SP and thats great. I just wanted to share my opinion and I have read other reviews that share it, that the SP in Stalker was disapointing.

To be honest I don't really buy games for multiplayer, especially a game like STALKER. I have TFC which takes up all of my multiplayer time as I have yet to find a MP game more fun. I play games such as Far Cry, FEAR, STALKER, Prey, etc. for the SP only, in fact I haven't tried the multiplayer for any of them because I know that was not the intent when making those games. The SP was the focus and I've thought all of those games deliver a great SP experience in their own way. STALKER isn't as polished as the others but you can't let the little things detract from an otherwise unique, atmospheric, and fun game to play.
I tried Hostile Intent once a few years ago, and I don't keep up on multiplayer games. Only ones I follow now are FF and TF2.

I just picked this game up the other day. I figure Im pretty far into it, Im trying to deactivate the brain scorcher. good thing i blew it and got the uncalibrated psi-protector...
so far its only crashed twice on me, overall the game is really fun. quite a bit like resident evil or something with the way you can only carry so much equipment. i like the depth of the game and all the side missions.
only thing that seems stupid is if you find a stash without getting the location from someone else's pda there isnt anything in the stash...
btw, snorks and blood suckers are a pain in the ass
