Took these today- bear in mind that it's the first time I've ever let a dog (let alone a 4 mo old puppy) hang out a vehicle window, and I was holding the leash and the camera in the same hand, while motoring.
Though it's not easy to tell from these shots, Yoshi is still small enough to hop right out those windows when they're fully down (you can see how he's grown right here (you know you wanna because he is the "CPE of All Time") (http://public.fotki.com/veekachu/2007/cutest-puppy-ever!!1/)

He's an akita, of the "coated" or "plush" variety (long-haired, that is)

Akitas run between 90-130 lbs (females @ 75# are not unusual, they tend to be smaller than the males). In the time between losing Nikko and finding Yoshi we met a lot of akitas, and one beast- appropriately named Grizzly- I'd swear had to be topping 150, and he was an excitable boy too and would knock you out with his big numb skull if you weren't careful.
Here's a pic I found of a coated akita that's gotta be an optical illusion, because unless this girl is tiny that dog is a monster...

Heh, my dog plants her paws on my mirror when she hangs out the window. I have to call her back in when I brake though.

how much does a purebred akita puppy set you back?

Cost varies; Nikko, our first akita, was 600$, from a so-called "puppy-mill" in this case "Happiness is Pets!!", one of those strip-mall storefronts with about two dozen breeds in cages and a lot of lip service to "care" and "breeding". He was a good dog- and most of them are- but he died young of liver cancer, and it was very possibly genetic. You really never know what un-wanted, in-bred tendencies you can find in animals from such place.
We did a lot of research this time, and looked at a lot of breeders and a lot of dogs online. We even had another akita for a weekend in March (http://public.fotki.com/veekachu/2007/lakota/) from a local breeder that we met and became friendly with. She was also 600$, because the breeder did not consider her show-worthy and sold her to us as a "companion" dog. We returned her because she had severe temperment issues; they are going to keep her themselves, and not re-home her. It was a shame because she's a beautiful dog.
Yoshi came from a highly successful akita breeder in Wisconsin. This fellow's got Champions all over the world, and he asks 1200-1600$ for his show animals. Since Yoshi is "coated"- i.e. long-haired- he's also not considered show-worthy, and so we got him for a mere 800$. The long hair is considered an abberation, as is too short hair. In a demostration of the oft bizarre "ordered-randomness" of genetics, in Yoshis' litter there were 3 males and 2 females, and the males all had the long hair, and the girls both had too-short coats.

I like the long hair better than short and too-short hair. $800 isn't bad at all. This neurotic lady I used to work with told me she paid $1900 for her Newfoundland puppy, I think I would just hit up the pound myself but those are nice dogs.
Though, like you said the bad gene's can lead to tragedy for pets and their owners. My mom is a dog groomer and her regular customers treat their pets like children. One of her regular dogs was a Tea Cup Yorkie and I believe she passed away last week of heart problems, she was the cutest thing.

I had a female Akita. She lived for 8+ years then developed back issues. Her spine started to inflame and eventually I had to carry her (all 80 lbs) to the yard to go pee/poop and she was in severe pain. Had her put down. Was an awesome dog. Very gentle dog to us but got super pissed if someone she didn't know was near her "territory". Good dog with my other smaller yorkie as well.
Akita's are beautiful and awesome dogs. Only thing is they shed like nobodys business.....
She was solid white.
this is not her but looked just like her...i miss Dani... :(
