Well, I'm sitting at work and I'm bored, so I figured I would create a thread. The purpose of this thread is to name five albums you have recently discovered that are just plain awesome. They don't have to be new; only new to you.

Danger Mouse & Jemini - Ghetto Pop Life (Rap)
I found this when listening to a Jedi Mind Tricks-esque radio on Pandora, so I got the whole album and it is awesome. Some excellent rap.

Between the Buried and Me - Alaska (Metalcore)
I remember awhile back there was a thread about this album and everyone was talking about how great it was, and at the time I downloaded it but I just couldn't get into it for some reason. However, I just recently picked it up again to give it another go, and now I can't get enough of it.

Circa Survive - On Letting Go (Rock)
I'd never even heard of these guys until the thread created a day or two ago, but now it's become one of my favorite albums for the time being. I'm not even sure what genre to put it in, but it's certainly enjoyable.

Alexisonfire - Crisis (Hardcore)
As may have been apparently with my BTBAM explanation, I sometimes have to be in the right mood for an album to strike me. This is the case with this album. When I first got it, I just let it sit there for awhile because I didn't like it very much, but now I listen to it over and over. It never gets old.

Insomnium - Above the Weeping World (Melodic Death)
Not only are the instrumentals amazing, but, as I stated in my As Blood Runs Black thread not too long ago, the vocals seem to compliment the music rather than be the main focus point of the song, and I think that's one of the things that makes me like them so much, because a low, growling voice overrunning everything else is not my idea of a good song.

Do EPs count? If not, oh well.

Peccatum - The Moribund People (Avant-Garde Rock/Metal)

A side of project of Ihsahn, Ihriel, and Lord Pz. Another band tossed into the avant-garde mix. Some songs are more metal oriented whilst others are rock. The EP only has 3 songs, The Moribund People, A Penny's Worth of Heart, and For All Those Who Died (Bathory cover!), but it may be one of the best EPs I've heard. If you are into the more avant-garde, "what the fuck did I just hear" type of music, I highly recommend this EP, if not just for the Bathory cover.

Andromeda - Extension of The Wish (Progressive Metal)

An excellent Swedish prog metal band. It's not overly technical or full of too much obscure wankery, which makes it for a good listen. Has many good, catchy riffs and it makes it an overall enjoyable album.

Spiral Architect - A Sceptic's Universe (Progressive Metal)

This band alone proves Norway has more than just black metal to offer. Highly technical and has a very audible bass through out each of the songs and not drowned out like other metal (see: Pantera). It has your generic high pitched and wailing vocals, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Their album also includes an excellent Fates Warning cover, Prelude to Ruin.

Porcupine Tree - Fear of A Blank Planet (Progressive Rock)

If you haven't heard of Porcupine Tree hacks your sack off and FedEx it to me. Fear of A Blank Planet is the newest release from the mastermind Steven Wilson. It differs from the older, more psychedelic sound and is heavier in more parts than the rest of their disco. One of the highlights is the slowlness of Anesthetize is the slow build up before it turns into Meshuggah (if it is the track I am thinking of)

Ayreon - The Human Equation (Progressive Metal)

Yes, another prog album. The Human Equation is a prog album about the inner conflict of emotions of a man in a coma after a car wreck. The album progresses from a conflict of emotion, regression into childhood, and a story of betrayal with a twist ending that literally comes out of fucking nowhere, although you probably won't understand if you haven't heard 2 other of Arjen's concept albums. Even if this is your first Ayreon listen, I highly recommend it.

Sure!

Fear of a Blank Planet is a very awesome cd. Probaby my second favorite now, with Deadwing being my first.

Peccatum is highly under-rated. A lot of people get their albums thinking it's going to be just like Emperor and then talk about how terrible they are, but I think they're excellent. But then again I've only heard their Strangling From Within album which I really like.

Ouch, As Blood Runs Black's only release > anything AILD has ever done.

Im all knowing...nothing is new to me, not even DEP's upcoming release  jk

3 Inches Of Blood - Fire Up The Blades (Heavy Metal)
Have been looking for good (new) Heavy Metal for awhile now and this album seems to be hitting the spot right now. Then again, in a week my perspective on it will change.

Agreed. I was a bit skeptic after reading reviews on m-a for them, but it seems like most people were just expecting avant-garde Emperor material. I must say the video for The Moribund People is a nice what the fuck moment.

I guess you could say it was rediscovering it. I'd heard it a few times before, but never listened closely to the lyrics. Just incredible storytelling.

I've been getting into Black Rebel Motorcycle Club alot lately, all of their albums, mainly Take Them On, On Your Own and Baby 81.

Started listening to some older shit like Spacemen 3 recently as well. Pretty good euphoric music that brings me back to the blacklight buzz days.

Also I recently discovered Bazoo Bajou, the album Sataa is fucking awesome if you like shit like Tosca and K&D and Thievery Corp. and other electronic dub like that.

And last but not least, The Warlocks, mainly Rise and Fall. House of Glass is one of the greatest songs ever recorded IMO, I've been listening to alot of that shit lately.

Common - Ressurection is incredible. I used to think Be was such a great album. I then got Ressurection and can't believe it was made in '96. WAY ahead of its time, and flows beautifully.

I didn't discover these guys too recently, maybe a few months ago, but On The Might of Princes is incredible. My friend told me to listen to them about a year ago so I downloaded their album and listened once. I was impressed but sort've forgot about them. A few months ago I started listening to Sirens again and I literally listen to the album on my way to work almost every day. Its a shame they broke up :(

The Appleseed Cast - Two Conversations/Low Level Owl. I was a big fan of Peregrine, but never really found myself getting into these two albums. I saw them live recently and figured I'd give their other stuff a shot again, and they're really great. Much less, well, post-rock experimental and more standard catchy indie rock, but awesome nonetheless.

edit:

Oh, and The Bad Plus - Prog. Possibly some of the best modern jazz I've ever heard. Their drummer is absolutely incredible. Listen to Everybody Wants To Rule The World (yes its a jazz cover, so awesome) and 2/3 the way into the song is the greatest jazz drum solo I've ever heard. EVER.

Philip Glass - Einstein on the Beach (opera/avant-garde)

A must for fans of opera or Philip Glass. One two three four/one two three four five six/one two three four five six seven eight.

My Bloody Valentine - Loveless (shoegaze)

Although this album's been well popular for a long time, I never ventured much out of metal until the last year or two so I hadn't heard it. Only Shallow and Soon are pretty awesome, still trying to figure out whether or not I like everything else in the middle though.

Jaga Jazzist - What We Must (progressive jazz/jazz-house)

I was looking around at Garm's favorite bands, Jaga Jazzist being one of them, and this album pretty much blew me away. They're basically a ten man experimental and instrumental jazz band, and they're slowly moving up to my favorite.

Coil - Musick to Play in the Dark (experimental/electronic)

Pretty similar to Ulver's minimalist era (Silencing the Singing/Silence Teaches You How to Sing). Not much else to say... Coil rapes.

Peter Gabriel - Security (rock/progressive rock)

Didn't really know what else to put as the fifth, but I just bought this album the other day and it completed my Peter Gabriel discography, so yeah...

Only Shallow and Soon are pretty awesome, still trying to figure out whether or not I like everything else in the middle though.Quite the album, perfected and killed shoegaze at the same time. I'm with you though, Only Shallow and Soon are the highlights of the album, but the whole thing is great once you give it a few listens to sink in.

You might want to check out Ride (Nowhere is usually considered the second best shoegaze album, very similar to MBV but more melodic), Swervedriver (try Mezcal Head), and the Cocteau Twins (Heaven or Las Vegas is my favorite).

I know you said 5, but I can't believe I forgot Devin Townsend - Ziltoid The Omniscient (Progressive Metal). It's a concept about a 4th dimensional alien, Ziltoid The Omniscient, threatening to destroy the hu-mans and planet Earth if he does not get the fuel for his ship: the blackest cup of coffee. It sounds goofy, but Devy is goofy, and I'd put this above City and Infinity but below Terria.

what...that....fuck....is.....shoegaze......
do i even want to know? If MBV is the best "shoegaze" band, then i probably dont haha.

BTW everyone needs to "discover" Refused - The Shape Of Punk To Come. Arguably the best Hardcore album ever. If you haven't heard it, i suggest you do very quickly. Jaga Jazzist also kills...very good Acid Jazz.

Shoegaze was an offshoot of alternative rock that started in the late 80s and into the early 90s that was characterized by droning, fuzzy, distorted guitar soundscapes and usually low mixing on vocals. It all just kind of blended together into a wall of sound. Its called shoegaze because during live shows the bands that played it would just stare at their shoes on stage. It mostly died off after Loveless came out, since it was viewed as the perfect shoegaze record and no one knew where to go from there. It's kind of made a comeback recently with bands like Serena Maneesh and Asobi Seksu though.

Calling MBV "shoegaze" is kinda like calling AC/DC just another rock band. ;)

Sure they came out in that period of music but Kevin Shields was such an innovator in developing sounds and recording techniques that I think he went way above all the rest of that time.

You should hear some of the remixes he did for other bands. The soundtrack to Lost In Translation has loads of Kevin Sheilds/MBV on it.

I saw them at least a dozen times and my hearing still suffers to this day because of it. Amazing band. :)

Well, here's mine.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Phantom of the Opera" (Soundtrack)
Wasn't till recently that I actually watched the movie that was made in 2004 or somewhere around there, and I absolutely loved the music. I needed to get the CD. Songs like Angel of Music, Masquerade, The Mirror, and others are just great. How I would love to do lighting/sound for this play in real life.

Jedi Mind Tricks' "Servants in Heaven, Kings in Hell" (Rap)
This album is really good if you enjoy rap. It's not so much of mainstream, though. Songs like Serenity Murder, Black Winter Day, and Shadow Business are really good.

Gorillaz's "Self-Titled" (Alternative/Rap)
More of a rediscover, and I really like it. Songs like Rock The House and Clint Eastwood just bring back memories. Good CD.

Unfortunately some chick at work started playing that Mika cd - blabbedy blabbedy cartoon life blabbedy whatever and that cd is just weird and gets stuck in my head the way Queen used to. Trippy CD.

Also whatever Buckcherry cd has crazy bitch on it cause that song gets stuck in my head to the point that I start singing it to everything and it's pissing off my wife. "Hey, brushing your teeth you bitch cause you got to get them pearly white..." yeah, sucks.

Rediscovered Never Mind the Bollocks...Here's the Sex Pistols recently after I hadn't heard it in years. God bless VH1 classic and the old rock marathons recently. Fucking love the CD, and they will always be the best Punk Rock IMO ONLY!!!

Also because of that Headbanger's Metal Documentary, I listened to a lot of Ministry and Sepultura too which I hadn't heard in atleast 10 years. Still kicks ass. If you haven't heard In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up by Ministry, then go now and find it somewhere, one of the best live albums EVAR!!!

Also heard Kiss Unplugged for the first time about a month ago, and love it, love it, love it.

Sadly, I also love the Korn Unplugged album.

And lastly, some guy at work had a Pearl Jam album called Around the Bend that had all their greatest songs on it, and since I hadn't listened to them since VS. there was a lot of good stuff I didn't think Pearl Jam could do on there, like acoustic and shit.
