Being a die-hard metal fan, I somehow just recently discovered them and their 3 albums. They fucking rock. Similar but not as good as Opeth. Any other melodic dm metal bands I need to know of, besides DT? Oh, and if you didn't already know, Paradise Lost, the song, will own your soul. This beckons knox.

"melodic dm metal bands"? Melodic death metal metal bands or am I just confused =p And by DT I'm assuming you mean Dark Tranquility and not Dream Theater or Devin Townsend? Also, if you were talkling about Insomnium, I looked through their disco and saw no song named Paradise Lost, :x

I'll check them out, but I'm not too big on the whole death, melodic death, tech, brutal, or melo-death scene.

By Paradise Lost I was referring to Symphony X's title track of their new album; nothing to do with the topic at hand, just a great song. And by DT, I meant Dark Tranquility. Either way, I figured you'd have some wisdom for me. If not, no biggie.

First off Insomnium is better than Opeth, although orchid is a good album.

some good melodeath bands are:
At The Gates
Dissection's newest album, but listen to them all
Garden Of Shadows
Nightrage is alright
Noumena
Mors Principium Est is alright too
In Flames obviously
Edge Of Sanity

Dissection's latest album is terrible. Kinda glad that whats his face commited suicide so that he couldn't tarnish that band's legacy anymore.

I haven't picked up any melodic death albums for a really long time but here are some of my favorites:

Die Apokalyptischen Reiter (http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=2530) - All You Need Is Love is probably their best album. Almost every track on that album is killer but once you listen to Gone and Regret you will be hooked forever. Archives has these guys labeled as folk/death which is a little redundant since folk metal is synonymous with melodic metal 99% of the time. I like to think of them as keyboard laden death metal.

Nightrage (http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=4431) - Their first album is fantastic. Glow of the Setting Sun won't let you down.

Hearse (http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=7005) - The band Johan Liiva formed after leaving Arch Enemy. Sort of continues the early sound of Arch Enemy but I think they do it better. Dominion Reptilian is the album you should check out by them because the song Torch is golden.

Nonexist (http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=962) - Another Johan Liiva band, also sort of in the vein of early Arch Enemy. Also do it better. They only have one album I and guarantee enjoyment from start to finish. Songs that will make you glad you're a metal fan: The Devil Incarnate, A Halo Askew, Ebony Tower. The album intro will make you beg and plead for that lead to come back, and it will, but it's just a taste of things to come. You will find it again in A Halo Askew.

Hypocrisy (http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=96) - Their entire catalog pretty much rapes (aside from The Arrival and Catch 22) and if you're in the mood for some very aggressive absolute armageddon causing melodic death metal then go for their latest album. Fearless, Let the Knife Do the Talking and Warpath are all excellent from that album. For their older albums try out Abducted (Roswell 47 is possibly their best song ever) and Into The Abyss (Fire in the Sky is another contender for their best song).

Oh yes, Paradise Lost is some pretty grade A raping. I'm not big on the death scene so I can't give ya any good recs :x

I am here, so don't fear.

First off, you want to go to their website and download the demos. They are fucking fantastic http://insomnium.net/releases_demo.html. I kind of prefer the demo version of Dying Chant as to the album, but whatever.

The Absence
Amoral (not as melodic but still they are pretty good)
Buried Dreams (from Mexico, represent?)
The Chasm - Deathcult for Eternity: The Triumph
Detonation
Exhumation (pre-Nightrage goodness)
Fragments of Unbecoming (not really melodeath, but the dual guitars and blast beats could give you whiplash)
Gardenian
Kalmah - The Black Waltz (a lot better put together than their previous albums)
Nightshade - Wielding the Scythe (if you can find this, it's worth it)
Obscurant (now this isn't necessarily melodeath, but their atmospheric sound is similar to the Insomnium atmosphere)
Searing Meadow (quite close to Insomnium, well early Insomnium)
Winds of Torment

If you really want something closer to Insomnium; Noumena, Searing Meadow, and Obscurant are quite outstanding.

And also, Paradise Lost is rape.

what you are saying is that it was different from the other albums so you didn't like it. it's better than most melodic death metal released today so i have no complaints.

No I don't like the album period. I know what good melodic death sounds like and Dissection's last was not good melodic death. It was an attempt to go into an already too over done genre. They didn't do anything distinct (other than off himself when his album didn't meet with acclaim from anyone... er because his life's work was now complete ). The riffs are bland and when you call a riff bland in melodic death that really says something. It's biggest drawback is that they didn't continue the feel of their first two spectacular albums and instead changed their sound in an attempt at some modest mainstream success. Unfortunately everything they did on their album had already been done, to excess, a decade earlier. Conclusion: Terrible album.

More suggestions:

Unmoored (http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=6369)
Scar Symmetry (http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=32861) - they pretty much are exactly what it would sound like if you mixed Unmoored with Soilwork.

Unmoored is kinda unique on the scene but Scar Symmetry is much more of a genre fan band.

People who hate this album and believe that it tainted Dissection are those who are blind to the album's true purpose. It is the Dissection album--moreso than anything Nodveidt had done in the past.

How do you figure? I probably didn't give the album enough of a chance but I'll stick to my guns and say the album is terrible. But I am not a melo-death fan boy and am extremely sick of the genre so I may be a little biased.

Dissection was one of the few bands that actually was more than just a band. It had a purpose. Read up on Dissection and Jon Nodveidt and what he was trying to accomplish with his art and you'll see why Reinkaos is the paragon of Dissection's work.

Whoever suggested Noumena, I commend you: such fantastic music. I have Absence and Anatomy of Life, both pretty much own my soul. That is all for now.

If you can get Noumena's Pride/Fall, you'd be in for a treat as well. And I think 4 of their demos can be found on their website. Such a fucking good band.

Edge Of Sanity's Purgatory Afterglow album owns my soul....please help me get it back.

Also I know some people might want to disagree with me but Vehemence - God Was Created and Helping The World To See are pretty godly. I finally figured out Spirit Of The Soldier on guitar and the fucking solo is addicting.
