I'm wanna expand my music horizon, but I don't know where to start. I like almost all kinds of music, but I'm really looking for a band like A Perfect Circle, or Dream Theater. Whatever you find good though, please refer. I listen to everything except country. When it comes to rap, I really only like older stuff and stuff like Jedi Mind Tricks or Jurassic 5...Or things among those lines.

So, whatever, throw what you can at me.

Liquid Tension Experiment is the closest you'll get to Dream Theater simply because it is Dream Theater. :o Try, Refused - The Shape Of Punk To Come. Really no way to classify these guys except maybe Post-Hardcore??? I wouldn't even call them that though with this release, bound to raise a few hairs on your body.

I listen to LTE, and it's kinda like DT, but it also has Tony Levin, and of course, it's art rock.

I'll try Mechanical Poet.

Any bands that sound like A Perfect Circle that you know of, Knox?

What really separates a not-that-harsh prog metal band from an art rock band? Strictly sonically speaking? I guess it depends what you define "art rock" as.

To get back on topic, here are some random bands you may or may not like. They don't sound anything like APC or Dream Theater, but if you're really looking to expand your horizons then check them out. (Recommended albums and a rough idea of genre in parenthesis).
The Replacements (Let it Be and Tim, college/early-alt rock)
Wilco (Summerteeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, alt-country/indie rock)
Drive-By Truckers (The Dirty South, southern rock)
Sugar (Copper Blue, alt-rock)
Pavement (Slanted & Enchanted and Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, indie rock)
The Exploding Hearts (Guitar Romantic, punk/power-pop)

Also if you want to find bands similar to the ones you listed in your initial post head to the All Music Guide (www.allmusic.com), it's a great resource.

I was deeply disappointed to not find Pig Destroyer's Prowler In The Yard under the top grindcore albums...its practically THE grindcore album. But then I saw At The Gates atop the Scandinavian Metal list, so i guess they are ok :p

Assuming you haven't heard it already, Siamese Dream (and to a lesser extent, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness) by the Smashing Pumpkins is an awesome album that I have consistently lumped together with Mer De Noms. They both share a full and layered sound that isn't exactly identical but remains fairly close.

specific tracks:

Rocket
Hummer
Cherub Rock
Geek USA
Quiet

If I didn't already know everything about anything, I would take said suggestions. :p Actually I enjoy these threads...gives me great confidence that we can kick the MTV Generation gimmick and actually realize we can discover music on our own.
