Between the bowling thread and whether or not Vince Mcmahon is dead thread I thought I'd pose a question they asked over at espn:

In his prime who would you take?

Griffey
Arod
Bonds

Personally I'll take Griffey. Something like 10 GG's in CF in a row while being a monster at the plate. Arod is a very close second considering the numbers he puts up especially when he played SS. I would be more inclined to vote for Bonds if the Barry Bonds who broke the single season record didn't look like he took shits as big as the old Barry Bonds.

Griffey, hands down. Rodriguez next, and then Bonds. There are probably a few other players I'd take in front of Bonds that are still playing today.

Who in their right mind would take Bonds first?

Griff > Rod > Juice

However if I knew Griffey was going to become so injury-prone I would take the rod.

Bonds' statistics are pretty unreal. His on-base-percent in his prime is over .550. A-Rod and Griff hover right around .380 - .410. Plus, Bonds is hitting around the same HRs, RBIs, and BA. Had Bonds had some protection, imagine what he could have done. Neither A-Rod or Griffey has been played like Bonds.

In Bond's prime, he's not winning any gold gloves, but he's only a year removed from 3 of them.

Simply put Bond's changed the games he played in more then either Griffey or A-Rod.

I would take the rod.

???

Griffey. No doubt. Bonds' records may look stellar, but Griffey had an awesome super nintendo game. :D

Depends on which prime of Bonds you're talking about:

The Pirate Bonds prime where he was a 5 tool player and won MVP every other year?

Or the Giant Bonds prime where he just bashed home runs.

Well since most players don't have two primes I'd say the 5 tool Bonds.

I'd argue that on Bonds...:)

This question isn't fair just because I don't believe we've seen Arod in his prime yet. He's having an amazing year this year but I honestly believe his best years are ahead of him.

Between Bonds and Griffey its no contest. Bonds by far.

Bonds:

RBI's: 1961
SB: 513
BB: 2496
BA: .299
OBP: .444

Griffey:

RBI's: 1652
SB: 180
BB: 1116
BA: .291
OBP: .374

And we all know about the HRs. You might be saying to yourself, "Self, the question states that each player is healthy and I think Griffey would have been better if he wasn't a leper!" The world isn't perfect and injuries are a reality. Stats aren't everything but they do tell the truth.

Edit: and yes I know Griffey is/was a better fielder but I doubt many people would sacrifice Bonds' stats for a GG in CF, despite how good he was.

I mean if you set aside the drugs issue, it's Bonds, no question. Most dominant non-pitcher to ever play the game.

grif > arod > juice

id take grif over bonds any day. i think a runner would be more worried about getting gunned by grif then bonds (if they were both cf's)
for batting id take griffey again. bonds walks too much.
but overall arod is good too. im going with griff

They do when they decide to inject enough HGH to OD an elephant. It's really a tough question for me, both Griffey and Arod are very close. I'd probably take Griff due to his defense and left-handed stick.

As 'blah' said, if you set aside all the drug issues and what not.... there's no question. It's Bonds. You don't top a guy that puts up an OBP of .500~.600... that is RIDICULOUS. Bonds, by himself, made the Giants a contending team for those years. And I could seriously care less about your defense if you hit 73 HRs in a season while getting on base over half the time.

But seriously, Arod's best days might be ahead of him so it might be too early to tell. But I don't think he'll ever top .500 OBP. Not that OBP is EVERYTHING, but really having a player with an OBP that high really changes the game for your team. So he doesn't get to a few balls that other gold glovers might get to... he'll just make it up at the plate AND THEN SOME.

P.S. I fucking hate Bonds, he can rot in hell.

I'll take the homerun bonds first, he carried the worst world series team i've ever seen. Then I'd take Griffey as a 5 tool player, then Bonds as a five tool player, then A-Rod.

Reason is that I know A-Rod wouldn't help much in the playoffs.

The 5-tool Pirate Bonds was one of the worst players in the history of the playoffs, almost single-handedly LOST the Pirates the NL title 3 years in a row, keep that in mind before you crucify Arod for it.

I'd say Griffey only because as great as the other 2 are/were, Griffey was an excellent teammate as well, but based on pure talent and productivity I'd take Arod, as I too think he's just now hitting his peak.
