on new Mac's it allows you to run Tiger OS + Windows. I've heard it doesn't play games too well so good luck. By crossover im assuming that's what you mean. If not then good luck either way!

intel macs let you install boot camp to run os x and XP/Vista on seperate partitions. I've never played games on the XP partition but i saw a video of someone doing it with HL2 and it seemed alright. It'd probably be best with an iMac, macbook pro, or anything higher up the food chain. Those are the cheapest macs with decent video cards

yeahh i've just got an iBook G4 but it was one of the later ones... so no intel here!
i just thought that crossover might work with powerpc based macs.

I've got a macbook pro, the only games I've played on it are CNC3 and FEAR and they both run really well, so I'm sure it could run HL2.

You need an Intel based Mac to do the crossover shiznat though right? Has to support virtualization at least I'd guess..

Yes, you can run steam on Boot Camped macs. I have a macbook pro that boots OSX and XP, and steam runs flawlessly on it.
Frames are high, even in widescreen resolutions in HL2:DM, but 1440x900 resolution is pushing it. you have to stay around 1280x768 to get the highest frames.
As far as a crossover app that emulates a windows OS, i would NOT recommend it.
BTW, boot camp does not work perfectly for windows booting. there are a few quirks but they are minor. Overall I'm impressed with the macbook pro's performance in windows, now only if they can get some REAL drivers out instead of the beta ones that are a bit buggy!
I've been playing Command and Conquer 3 most often on the macbook ATM, and it works fine with high frames as long as all image quality in that game is set to medium. There's some effect in high that owns the built in ATi card thats in it.
Specs of Macbook Pro: Intel Core Duo, 2GIGS of RAM, 120GB HDD (so its one generation older than the brand new macbook pros.

Hey rome, what kinda fps are you throwing out at 1280x768, and what do you have running in terms of quality, whats it set on?

Hey rome, what kinda fps are you throwing out at 1280x768, and what do you have running in terms of quality, whats it set on?
The game runs uber smooth with all quality settings up, but with NO ANTI ALIASING... My netgraph indicates ~60fps in outdoor areas, and it spikes to 150+ in indoor situations...
When used to the 100-150 fps you average indoors (depending on the amount of action), you can definitely feel a bit of a dip to the outdoor situations, but considering its a laptop and a MAC one at that, I'm pretty impressed.
There are occasional outdoor frame dips as well during extreme high action, but the framerate is nice and solid in the grand scheme of things, and if you can lower the resolution another notch, you'd be averaging 90 fps outdoor and still around 150-180 indoor.
I can't wait to see how tf2 performs on these laptops, I've been waiting for SO LONG!!! :)

If you want to run windows and games wouldn't it make a lot more sense to buy a PC? It just seems strange to pay the premium for a Mac then run windows on it, it's like putting all terrain tires on BMW.

Well.. I have a PC that was for gaming for TFC. My Macbookpro runs TF2 at 60 FPS whereas the PC runs at sub 20. So that's why.

i tried it on my macbook, tfc got like 50fps max but most of the time 10-15fps choppyness. and tf2 had a graphical issue. all the visuals textures and soforth were all really bright and unplayable. i did bother to mess with the hl2 options menu, but i did not fool around with my video card driver util's. no luck

Macbook or Macbook pro?

Yea.. Because when I ran Crossover on my Macbook Pro, I had roughly 50 FPS in TF2 with really no problems except that I couldn't read the text chat. You must be doing something wrong :X

but running tf2 on it on your lap certainly does.

Then I wouldn't expect it to do that well since the non pros have Intel integrated graphics.

Well, Bad Luck, like someone above posted, without running TF2 the fans are prob running at norm speeds, but when I am playing TF2 and or just finishing up and touch right above the F5 key where it gets the hottest, is too hot. It prob gets like 180º. But then again, TF2 is a resource whore so what do I expect..
