If you already have HL2 or Ep1, you don't have to install them when you get the Orange box. You gift them through Steam.

Now, with the pre-order... you can't gift them yet, gifting won't be an option until the release day for the Orange Box. On that day, or whenever you buy the Oragne Box thereafter, you will get a notice through Steam that you have either HL2, Ep1, or both available to gift to someone.

ooooh so when it says "receive Orange Box gifts" it means u receive the games u can give to others and they become activated after the box is out, its not saying u need the box to get game gifts from others.
