I have the same problem, I tried windowed and it didnt work, I also tried -dxlevel 80 and it didnt work.
People say its my video card. I have a geforce 4 mx and apparantly it runs directx7, however I have directx9 and I can run FF/HL2 awesomely.
But I guess TF2 Just requires that much extra juice so I think my only option is to get a new video card, darn.

well remember guys it is still a beta. Unless you wanted to go bone out for a new video card anyway, I'd hold on and see if any of that gets addressed by official launch.

Has Valve released the official system requirements yet? That's another reason I waited to buy the physical box. I still have doubts that TF2 will play on my rig.

After loading screen I get black screen. Since there are no options screen, I'm not sure how to try starting it in windows mode. Crap

I had to run -window as well, but then it runs perfectly. And I'm on a laptop, with a damn GO 7400. Really impressed with how well this runs.

-fullscreen -width 1280 -height 1024 -refresh 60
put that in your shortcut icon, if you have a CRT you can up the refresh to 80, I am pretty sure TF2 does not support over 80 refresh cause my game crashed with anything over 80.

It's a resolution problem, all you need to do is set your monitor to his native resolution. If your not sure what is it just play with different resolution set your monitor to something really high in windows then start tf2. Worked for me. Also regarding this there's an official thread on steam forums.

beat me to it.
I found it deep in the Steampowered forum. You would think they would have stickied it but I guess not.
Worked for me..
