I was thoroughly impressed just by walking around in my own lan server trying each class. I love the engineer and how you can walk away as your sg is going up.. allowing for faster upgrades. The animations are really well done.
I LOVE the sticky pipes for the demo, I love the fact you can stick them to walls/ceilings.
I love the taunts, and how each taunt is different depending on which weapon you have out/equipped at the time.
Hopefully I'll have time to play a little later today.

Holy fucking shit, its OCTANE! Welcome back bro!
As for the game...
1. This game is absolutely GORGEOUS. It's just amazing. Can't say enough about this game graphically.
2. Scout (of which I primarily play) seems underpowered without the nailgun. The shotty seems more beefy, but how the hell am I supposed to take out an SG without a nailgun? I managed to do it with the pistol, but that took forever, and could never be accomplished with a circle strafe maneuver. With the slow firing of the characters, it seems the Scout's speed does afford him some protection for being difficult to hit, but not against an SG, its practically an instant death, and with no conc grenads, Heavies are almost just as deadly. Oh, and the double jump is puny... Soldiers seem to have all the propulsion assisted jumping (maybe demo too, I am not sure).
It was late so I didn't get to play much, so I will play some more classes later tonight.

Every class is not supposed to be able to do everything. That was one of the reasons for taking out grenades. Now, spies will be the best at taking out sentry guns along with soldiers and demos (if he can get close enough to lob grenades/stickes to it).

I played it, pretty shitty.
-No nades, no nade2, no more concing
-all melee weapons do 1 hit kill from behind
-no ragdoll
-lower fps then FF
-Wait times like in CS after death
-Water looks horrible
-Scout has a sawed-off super shotty, making it prolly the best dming class lol
-Medic has to be the most boring class ever invented, only job is to strictly heal/infect, some people might be into that sort of thing but I play FPS's for combat
-Demo's pipes are laggy, yellows can stick to walls which is pretty kool
-Pyro has no IC
-HW still a beast
-Spy about the same, takes awhile to cloak, FF's is better.
-NG prolly best class tho they kept shitty tele's which take forever to build, SG's are the only good thing about the game on how they build, looks like a beast
-Snipers same as TFC
-Soldiers rockets seem slow
-Ng's Sollies have singe shotties which sucks.
-The taunting is entertaining but will get old quick
-Rockets and pipes pass through teammates like they werent there
-Textures look like shit
The game is so slow, I see no potential in CTF organized gameplay.
Need to inform all those 1000's of people playing TF2 thats theres a better game out there, 90% havent heard of FF

I've enjoyed it thoroughly. I played an entire round on gravelpit, and it was a lot of fun. My only gripe is the respawn times, but the server I was on lowered them down to 6 seconds, which is bearable. I think TF2 does a very good job of expressing the team element. Even though it was a pub, you could tell the people were trying to work together to capture the points. Also, I am in love with no grenades. It's very refreshing to play a fortress game without spam being fucking everywhere.

After looking at those screen shots from Milos, there is no way in hell i will play this game. Seriously, if i wanted to play a Cartoon game, i'd go buy "Hello Kitty Goes to College and Strips to Pay Tuition" fuck all that noise. The reason I like FF so much now is because its TFC on steroids. We've all (most of us) have played TFC or some form of TF since QTF days, and why change on a good thing? There is a reason that TFC lasted so long, because we enjoyed the game play, and the style of play. FF maintains that, adds soem rape graphics, changes some shit around, and *boom* you have a manly TF style game. I do predict a lot of little children or old ass people playing TF2, and it being the center piece for "To Catch a Predator" on Dateline.

I played for about 20 minutes before going to class...and my first impressions are very cool. I can get over the respawn delay, but I hope a lot of servers either turn it down to under 10 seconds or off in general.
Playing soldier is sort of different because you can't really shoot near your feet without owning yourself as much since you only have 200 total hp now. We shall see though. Having a medic heal you was pretty pwnage tho, lol. I think I will really like this class for match play.
The graphics look pretty much exactly like in all the promo videos and that is awesome. I get decent frames: 50-150 depending on where I'm at.
Sniper is quite a bit different, not sure what my thoughts are on that yet. I think it'd be cool tho after I get used to it.

I totally agree. I was arguing with some TF2 fanatic and some spy from [VOO] in a FF game yesterday, saying the exact same thing you were saying above and all I got was flamed and ignored.
Hey, if people want to play a watered down version of a fuckin' amazing game, let them. The entire game is aimed at people who aren't serious about their FPS games. They're including server-wide stats, calculating any imaginable stat, which was something only pub servers did in TFC. There were probably a few exceptions, but I'm sure if you asked a lot of people if they cared how many times they died by a grenade [Oh wait it's TF2, nevermind] or a Flamethrower, I'm hoping a lot would careless. They're marketing the game to a new audience, and that audience includes young kids, and even older adults.

Their new stat system is going to count stats from every single pub server you've been in, and will total them all up. Kind of like BF2 stats. Blarghs are used to compare e-peens after a serious, competitive match. Comparing the two is kind of laughable.
GOOD. So that basically encompasses all ages? Who says TF is for any particular age group.
I guess you have a point, Valve HAS shafted the TF community for, how many years now?
I've played TF2 for about an hour. It was fun, sure. It was slow, and a really good way to kill time, but I don't see how truly competitive gaming can go on, when you have respawn timers, no concussion grenades, and no bhopping/ramp sliding/etc. FF and TF2 are polar opposites, but both are genuinely fun games.

There is a reason that TFC lasted so long, because we enjoyed the game play, and the style of play.
Is 10 clans, and 150 players considered "lasting long" these days? TFC is a great game but it's been on its deathbed for a while. I love it, but there must be a reason it didn't succeed (marketing maybe?).
FF is a great mod, but it's basically TFC with a facelift (which is what they were going for, so well done to the FF team). I wanted something new from TFC, and out came TF2.
TF2 feels really slow and bulky to me. At first glance, there doesn't seem to be half the potential as there was in TFC. Players die so fast there will be no potential for cool things like airshots. There's no incentive to juke or be clever in your movement, because, again, players die in two shots.
The only dynamic aspect of TF2, to me, seems to be the overall strategy of how it's played, with certain classes actually performing certain roles. Which is nice, but it takes out a lot of the "cool factor" that I think really made TFC great.
I had really high hopes for TF2, but in the end, it feels like it was built for pubbers. I know it took some time for TFC to become what it was, but the dynamics of TF2 don't feel like they even allow for the kinds of unique gameplay that we saw evolve from TFC.
I don't want a new TFC, but I'd like a game that can adapt and evolve rather than something that plays the same every time you sit down to play it. TFC was unique in this way -- you could shotty someone a few times, rocket them, airshot them, nade them, shoot them with your SG, det them with a dispenser, knock them into lasers, caltrop them, etc.
In Tf2 it feels like you can just ... shoot them. And that seems really boring to me.
I think I'd be happier if they inreased the player class speeds and removed the respawn timer (except players die so fast that the respawn timer might be necessary). I think people who immediately discount this game because it lacks grenades and movement, are generally people who discounted the game before it was released.
Having played it, though, I'm disappointed that after 8 years I don't have a product that appears to have the potential (note: not the same as the GAMEPLAY) of TFC -- in leagues, dynamic, or in adaptability.
I give it a 6/10, and I really hope some stuff changes in it... there's the chance league play will be fun with it.

I absolutely love this game. Like most people have said, it's a great feeling to have 100's of full pubs to choose from with a wide array of players who are all friendly and just as excited as you are. You can form a new clan just by going into different pubs and recruiting the top player from each team...and that brings back good memories.
I love how in a map like 2fort you're forced to incorporate new strategies. Perhaps we'll see matches where players will have to change their class mid-game to cater to certain circumstances. Scouts and soldiers can't just be your offensive line anymore, you need to mix it up. I love that.
I think as the game gets older it will develop character like TFC did and people will discover little strategies and skills they can hone. I remember when TFC first came out strafing back and forth was THE way to run faster and how the ability to prime a grenade was the line between good players and bad players in pubs. Also, new maps will be made and with all the new blood there's potential for loads of innovation.
I can't wait for league play.

The game came out in what? Novemeber of 1999? So... Nov allll the way to September 2007 is a LONG time for a game to be "still active" you notice that you have a lot of channels out there for pickups, leagues are STILL going, not as strong as before.... but its still around in a sense.
GOOD. So that basically encompasses all ages? Who says TF is for any particular age group.
Well Sutterkane - I have a couple questions for that one. When you first saw the TF2 videos, it being a vibrant colorful cartoon fuck fest on screen, did you realize that when a company markets something to a younger audiance they tend to use things like Cartoons and bright ass colors? Also, have you noticed that in the FF game, when you ask for a medic he says "Shit i'm dying over here", swear words involved... thats not usually for little kids form what i understand right? Also, the fact that FF is a darker game, the character's look like actual people, old / young (edy was the model for teh scout) whereas in TF2 they look like cartoons. The Fonts used in the HUD, and the "Rubber Ducky" flying when Milos spawn camped... all aimed to kids.
So, Sutterkane - you mean to tell me, that me being 23 years of age, would go towards a game that looks like a cartoon for a person 9-16 or a game that looks like its for a more adult crowd of 18+? Just based on the Marketing styles for each game. I mean, seriously. When i cruise WalMart looking for Soccer Mom's to bend over on camera, do you think I stop in the toy isle because i wanna check out all the SUPER COOL NEW CARTOON ACTiON Figures? No. I'm in the GROWN-ASS-MAN isle.

I guess you have a point, Valve HAS shafted the TF community for, how many years now?
As has been stated by numerous members of this community, it didn't make financial sense to support TFC after STEAM was released. Valve doesn't just support HL mods (though it's probably its main product,) and the ones they DO support are those that maintained a large playerbase (see: DoD, CS.)
If you want to play TFC with better graphics and some additional goodies go play FF. What excites me about TF2 is the possibilities for building a NEW community around a Franchise I've known and loved for the past 7 years. I haven't played it yet, but I'm sure I won't be disappointed due to the fact that it lacks similarity to TFC.
On another note, TFC was never meant to be a game in the fact that it's release was just a "tide the masses over" deal while they finished development on TF2: Brotherhood of Arms. Anyone remember that? Maybe you should take a minute to think about how Valve changed what the game has become, vice what it could have been... CS with 9 jobs.

This and in general the whole cartoon issue people have I don't really understand. The original TFC models looked pretty "cartoony" as well imo in comparison to other games during the time. They weren't all dressed like badass soldiers in camo or anything. And do you remember birthday mode? I think the game has always had that light-hearted feel to it from the get-go its just most people who played it then WERE 9-18 and now they're older. Thus, they make a big deal about it looking like a "kid's game".

Lolz, gotta love a good instance of the "kiddie arguement". Cry about it being "cartoony" all you like, but the fact is that people of all ages like cartoons, or "animation", to put it in MAN words that you'll find less emasculating.
In art direction it's called "style", and it's something they give points for. You may not care for it in this case, but that you can even begin to make the argument that it's "marketed to kids" because it's "cartoony" is extremely amusing.
What it is is a radical departure. It's certainly distinctive, and obvioulsy it doesn't appeal to everyone. But if you can name me another "kiddie game" with napalm, baseball bats and balisongs in it I'll bring you lunch tommorrow.

The only reason why TFC was created was because a lot of people bought HL just to play TF2 (back then it was going to be a mod of HL). When the decision was made to make TF2 a stand alone product a lot of people got mad. Valve decided to make TFC to help appease those people and also take the opportunity to have it serve as a test bed for future technology to be put in TF2 (at this point it was still Brotherhood of Arms).
Valve even went as far as to try to rename TFC to TF1.5 to signify that it was a stepping stone between TF and TF2 (BoA). However, the name never caught on and they changed it back to TFC.
So in a way the only reason TFC and now FF exists is because of TF2.

What it is is a radical departure. It's certainly distinctive, and obvioulsy it doesn't appeal to everyone. But if you can name me another "kiddie game" with napalm, baseball bats and balisongs in it I'll bring you lunch tommorrow.
Veek, I need to come to Lombard and buy you a beer.

-Spy about the same, takes awhile to cloak, FF's is better.
NO WAY! The TF2 spy has simpler tools, but requires a lot more thinking. It's all about timing. And the knife is real close to TFC, you can still get kills from the side and top, I jumped on someones head and got him just like TFC, but its better than TFC because in TFC if you're too close to someone your backstab only does like half damage. Doesn't do that in TF2. The FF knife is even less forgiving than TFC, and because everybody is bhopping around you pretty much have to wait until somebody stops moving to knife them. I didn't play any of the other classes too much, but TF2 has the best spy class I have ever seen. The medic is great. I've never seen a healing class that was this fun to play. Overall I think the game is a great change of pace. I havn't had this much fun in a game since I first started playing TFC. I don't think I'll be playing FF anymore unless I'm really missing TFC after it's long dead.

This game is freaking awesome. I was very impressed. I love just running around and spamming my taunt key. The stickybombs are the greatest thing ever. [RoC] will have a server up and open vent as soon as the linux servers are out. We may be looking for a few old schoolers for TF2 as well, #roc.
It runs at a freaking 100 tic (thank god). Even though I average around 60 fps it doesn't feel like 60 fps at all. Everything is still very smooth. Unlike FF which runs at 30 tic :(

I've enjoyed it thoroughly. I played an entire round on gravelpit, and it was a lot of fun. My only gripe is the respawn times, but the server I was on lowered them down to 6 seconds, which is bearable.
I think this game needs a resup delay though. I mean if there isnt, I dont think anybody would get anything accomplished with the gameplay TF2 affords... honestly anywhere from 3-7 seconds is an appropriate resup delay...But ive been to servers with 20 second delays and its a real drag lol
it also seems to aid in making 24 man servers less crowded(?)
and was underwater for 3 months on a submarine. :)

yaaaa.... but i dont think the side or top stabs are because of a special insta-kill that comes with the spy, i think it has more to do with what seems as melee weapons being the best weapons to use at close range altogether

I played and it was a lot of fun aside from the fact that spies and demos seem to wreck everything (which I suppose isn't really a bad thing because of how early it is, they may just be easier to play) The game runs a lot better than ff, looks better than ff, and has more people too.
As far as league play goes, it will obviously be a lot different than tfc, but it's definitely possible. Any online game with more than 100 people can be played competitively, you just gotta realize that the game isn't tfc anymore. The first time I played, I didn't do all that well, I got killed a lot by people who might have never even played tfc in their lives... Put me and them on a ff server and it is a whole different story. They would be awful, and I would have an idea of what I am doing. This goes for everyone, and I think this is one of the main reasons why ff wont work out.

Backstabs have a special death message icon, and the top and sides counted as backstabs.

hmmm gonna try to pay a lil more attention... still need to tone down those melee's tho. its like they wanted every class unique, and made every class have the same ability that really made the spy stand out as far as being a killer goes
I mean i knew about the spy having a special death msg for its backstab, just didnt notice it for the top/side yet

I went engineer on 2fort and had two scouts raping me and my sg with their shotgun. They kill me in TWO DAMN SHOTS quite a bit before altering my style of play.
And they can rape sgs pretty easily by running out shooting once and dodging back behind a wall (from up close). I had my sg in the normal 2fort hall watching the spiral and long hall entrance as I watched the ele (well, stairs now) for them to come. They would kill my sg in 5 shots by doing this, and because we were so close in combat at the ele\stairs they killed me so fast. So I just popped their little fart bubble by staying in the spawn and doing shots from the doorway and running back in, lol.
Granted, it was like any other pub level. Where I was the only defender on a team of 15 people. So I guess I did good by holding them to 3 caps in a full maps rotation.
Still got a lot of adjusting to do.

Yeah you're right it's definitely made for 8 year olds.
Hey, isn't that a severed hand in the "meet the engineer" video? Real kiddie stuff there.
Also, if you're looking for Soccer moms in the "grown-ass-man" isle maybe you should re-evaluate where you stand sexually. Generally the "Soccer Moms" in that isle have a little more testosterone(along with cock and balls) than what I look for in a woman. Just a heads-up bro. (you walked right into that)

you bastard! you were that spy last night that was raping my shit. well actually, you were just raping everyone shit. i totally agree with the medic. I have never had so much god damn fun teaming up with a fatty and raping the shit out of everyone while healing him. and the ubercharge rapes to.
sigh, bring back memories of when i first started tfc. fuck ff, fuck tfc for that matter, the gameplay is so much more intense without nades, i was skeptical at first, but no nades makes it so intense. now you actually have to work together instead of just jumping straight to cap. you can still pipe jump with the demo, and the air acceleration is still there. i was actually bhopping a little, its just a little different, you have to get used to it.
i dont know how you haters are saying that its only a pub game and there is no hope for league play. to me its actually BETTER suited for league play, it takes a lot more teamwork to cap a point, and its a lot more satisfying when you do. i can see this getting as big in league play as cs is.

I played alot of scout on 2fort and killing an sg as one isnt easy if the ng lures you into thinking you can do the wall peekaboo with his gun as he pops caps in your ass. Soldier, spy, and demo are still the kings of difficult sg removal.

Both games have their unique elements and are a lot of fun to play. FF reminds me of good ole' TFC and everything that made it great. TF2 reminds me more of DoD with the uniqueness of each class glaringly apparent.
Unfortunately I don't think either are good enough to bring me back to league play D:

The only thing I was upset about was the lack of ctf maps. But having played the full rotation now.. 2fort is the least fun of them all. ctf just doesn't work well in pubs i guess. The new well - freaking awesome!

^ Fail. Its a multiparted statement, and i failed grammar. Touche tho, that was a decent one.
I will say I wish FF had the marketing power, and money of TF2. Because it would be a huge game right now. Regardless of that, I refuse to PAY for TF2. Hell, i didnt pay for TFC/HL2 any of that shit. And for what? Fifty bucks I can purchase this cartoon based game, and like... then what? Give it to the 12 year old girl i have in my closet? Use it to lure kids from their school bus stops into my house? FF was made by teh people, for teh people. *salute*

Not sure what your point is regarding those 2 shots. Those fire effects will be in FF as soon as Valve updates Source SDK Base with the new Source engine version. What else were you referring to? Vector based HUD on both, custom font both etc. Granted we had 1/100th of the modeling and animation time available and put into FF as TF2 had..
Still not seein your point w/those shots. Look at the hands and v_weapon in each shot and tell me which you think looks better. ;)

Ehh, let it slide.
FF looks better, whoever argues that is a huge smelly piece of butt lint. I personally enjoy both games. I like FF for when I feel like cruisin at a high rate of speed and doing gren\rocket combo's.. and I like TF2 for a different feel. They are both fun for me, I just know TF2 is incredibly boring if you are on a team where no one works together.

Takes a bit of getting used to. We would love to improve them to be more visible and clearly differentiated. First step = not have to use one skeleton for every class... we've had a hell of a time just getting the one completed and working well, unfortunately. Modding is rough business..

The game came out in what? Novemeber of 1999? So... Nov allll the way to September 2007 is a LONG time for a game to be "still active" you notice that you have a lot of channels out there for pickups, leagues are STILL going, not as strong as before.... but its still around in a sense.
You are a tremendous faggot.
And for the record, TF2's models look MUCH more realistic than FF's. And any game where you explode into pieces before little word bubbles pop up pointing out your torso and your severed limbs isn't aimed at 9 year olds. Fuck off.

Actually, it got created because at the time QWTF was huge. I think valve originally saw it as the game to launch their online play and take away the dominance of quake. That of course changed when CS became extremely popular and TFC kind of floundered since near the start a lot of QWTF players came over and masqueraded around the servers with 100 kills and no deaths. Making a lot of the newer players quit fast and get frustrated. When I introduced my friends to TFC they quit pretty quick and I had to coax them repeatedly to get them to try it again.

Trust me, I know all the news on TF2. I ran a site with Mwhahaha back in the day and still have the original screenshots of the horrible concept that they originally intended to dub TF2.
When TFC came out it was around the time such as now where QWTF was starting to "die off." I say that in quotes because people still do play the game. I quit the clan Taken to go to TFC because I was bored playing the same clans over and over each week.
Anyways, from a marketing standpoint my point still stands. QWTF for what it's worth is the mod that made the mod community and Valve bought them to try and capture some of the market that QWTF was, but CS picked up pace around the time and took over in the mod domination.
