I posted this on TeamFortressXtreme (http://www.teamfortressxtreme.com) and decided to share it with you poor guys who got TF2 and cannot find support.

If you are having crashes or random errors with Team Fortress 2 then please read on for some basic info.

First off make sure your PC is able to run TF2 from the System Requirements below...............

Minimum System Requirements

1.7 GHz Processor, 512MB RAM, DirectX® 8 level Graphics Card, Windows® Vista/XP/2000, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection

Recommended System Requirements

Pentium 4 processor (3.0GHz, or better), 1GB RAM, DirectX® 9 level Graphics Card, Windows® Vista/XP/2000, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection

An old GFX card like a Geforce4 or MX4000 will not run TF2 and some computers with "onboard graphics" may also have issues. Make sure you have completed these steps before installing TF2.............

Anti-virus and Spyware/Malware scans
Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmented
Updated Drivers and DirectX
Firewall and/or router settings prepared

If Team Fortress 2 is crashing during start-up, you may have to make a few adjustments to fix this.

# Right-click on Team Fortress 2 in the Steam games menu.
# Click on Properties.
# Click on Set launch options.
# Type the following into the launch options field:

-fullscreen -width 1024 -height 768 -refresh 60
You may adjust 1024 and 768 to whatever resolution you are comfortable with like -width 800 -height 600 and the refresh rate may be changed to -refresh 70 or whatever is working for you.

Make sure no other programs are running while playing TF2. Programs like messengers, Steam, Anti-virus, and others will hinder game performance.

If Team Fortress 2 gets stuck at the "Loading" screen and fails to work for you, try this..................

Go into Games/Launch Options/ and paste this.............
-map_background none -novid +map none -console

This should help with common TF2 issues. Please feel free to add any help

The recent update through Steam has actually fixed a few of these issues.

what about if my tf2 freezes while it is retrieving server info and wont go any further?

Even though I don't have TF2 (mainly because of the following issue), I am experiencing major problems in pretty much all my Source games, especially HL2: Ep1. At first, I played the game just fine. Then, at one point, I started experiencing the infamous freeze with looping sound after a while. Then, it started happening more frequently and only after a few minutes of playing HL2: Ep1. Then, a month or so ago, it just stopped working altogether: I get in the main menu, select New Game and it starts loading; but suddenly, the loading bar stops advancing and gets stuck at about 70% and nothing happens. Why am I explaining all this? Because the computer behaves the same way as when I got the looping sound freeze.

My point is this: in TF2, you freeze while loading, just like when it's loading a HL2: Ep1 map, and I get a similar problem in FF; you (we) probably freeze with the sound looping but since it's loading, there are no sounds; I've been having this problem since at least August 2006 and they still haven't fixed it, in fact, they told me they were not able to reproduce the problem; their only solution was to run the game with -dxlevel 70, because if I play in -dxlevel 80 or 81, it does load but it eventually freezes with the sound looping.

Hence the reason I didn't buy the OB because it doesn't support DX7 mode (even though I shouldn't have to do this because my card supports DX9!), so they've taken out the ONLY solution that works flawlessly, even if it's the dumbest solution ever.

Oh and in case you wonder what my specs are and if I should really HAVE to play in DX7 mode:
Athlon 64 3200+
1gb ram
ATI AIW 9800 pro
SB Audigy Gamer
(Everything is up to date)
