View Full Version : FF or TF2, my opinion thus far....

I loved TFC, the game owned. I played it for 4 yrs and learned something new right up till the day I quit. The game had massive depth.
Now you have FF and TF2.
FF is rather easy for me because all the things I learned years ago are in this game....
TF2 is rather easy for me because the game is so simple...
------
TF2 is a lot more fresh.
FF isn't quite fresh but not exactly stale yet either....
------
TF2 is going to have a mega community full of new faces that are just waiting to be owned.
FF is looking pretty tiny with some old familiar faces (a good thing), but hardly as exciting to me.... so far.
------
FF is buggy and won't be league worthy till January 08' - Don't kid yourself. I've played a few other mods like ETF (enemy territory fortress) and I can say that if FF survives till January with over 2000 people playing it'll be an accomplishment in itself...
TF2 will probably be playable right out of the "box." I crashed about 8 times in 20ish hrs of playing FF. No crashes in TF2 after about 10 hrs straight (yah i'm tired).
------
With this information, what game do you want to invest time into?
Forget emotion and be realistic.
To me both games feel easy.... but there is one wild card, how will TF2 develop in leagues.
I've found some really cool stuff playing TF2 already (day 1).
-- Scout double jump gets you in a lot of interesting places.
-- Medic is pretty entertaining, might actually be necessary on O and D.
-- HW appears to dominate pubs, but I now can say with confidence, I think matches will be soldier driven (yay).

well first of all, TF2 does seem quite simplitic, however, the depth is also there just like TFC... i rem pubbing back way before CNBL and i was a part of team dot, the top sniper guild/clan..... i went from that style play of sniper maps, to competiv play with teams... after NGW i stuck in there for some time and went to other clans.... i tryed playing other games to get that feeling i did while claning in TFC and could never get it, i got a gut feeling TF2is bringing that back for people like me :D FF just seems like the same old stuff... spawn Bhop back to your D spot, or bhop and conc jump back into the enemy base... dont get me wrong, it was fun when i was the only guy along with a hand full of others moving like that.... but now they got the bhop hacks..... like was in that CS hack ogc... ok so now everyone can move like i did with the mouse roll.... oh now lets make it so spys can take over sentry's and give scouts another OGC configure like wallhacks.... this will change it up.....

I pretty much feel exactly as you do sploosh. I've played TFC since it first came out and it is by far the best game that I have ever played. Even after all of these years, I still dig the game, which is why I also like FF (it is essentially TFC). FF is pretty buggy right now, but if the devs continue to work on it, it will only get better. The problem, though, is that it is essentially a continuation of an already very old game. Yes, I still like TFC, but will I want to play a game just like it two years from now? I'm not sure. It also doesn't help that FF is essentially only getting TFC's player base, which isn't very big and isn't sure to last for another eight years. TF2, on the other hand, is so new and fresh that I can't see myself not playing this game. The player base is huge already (compared to that of TFC and FF) and we're not even in full release.
Though I like both games, I think I would rather invest more of my time in TF2, but I'm sure that I will in the very least play FF every now and then when I'm really missing my old TFC-based action.

Sentry guns need to be nerfed in both. I swear FF SGs track you faster when you conc past them then they do when you walk. Also I watched about 3 suddend eath matches so far that ended in stalemates becasue it came down to 3 engies vs 3 engies. FUN

What bothers me a little about TF2 is the lack of grenades. Last night I was playing engi (as I used to do) and I was missing the feeling of a good EMP blast through the heavies.
Conc jumping was also fun to do, I will miss that.
Spy seems to be alot more fun now though.

1. TF2 is still BETA.
2. Will 2Fort be the ONLY CTF map still? (obviously, its been stated that TF2 is predominately CP-based... but if it goes live with another 5 maps say, surely there would be at least 1 or 2 more CTF maps with them. Also, do we know that community made maps can't be made?)
Obviously FF is suited for leagueplay, it's TFC2k7... TFC + alot of tweaks and some new features, etc... but I think its pretty early to make a judgement on TF2's leagueplayability. If anything, the sheer size of the player base (as it looks now), will probably make it a viable league format, wouldn't it?

I stumbled across this thread and felt compelled to reminisce about the voice wavs. I guess this is a good time a time as any to out myself as the creator of the 3rd batch of those things. I was in 404 when I made them and they were based heavily on inside jokes between 404 and PF at the time. Fortunately, a lot of them still hold up today.
I checked the date on the originals and they're from March 2002, towards the end of the peak years for TFC, so they got passed around more than Neuro. I used to have the link we used for them as well - it was an AT&T Voice Reader site where you could type in anything and convert it to a wav file.
In any event, I'm glad someone remembered them. I listened to them again and probably laughed just as hard at them now as I did back then.
